The baseline pressure is 1013.25 hPa, equivalent to 1013.25 millibar, or 29.92 inches of mercury. This setting is equivalent to the air pressure at mean sea level Sea Level MSL in the International Standard Atmosphere International Standard Atmosphere ISA . 1. Altitude tent

An altitude tent , also known as an altitude simulation tent or a hypoxic tent , is an enclosed living space which simulates high altitude by maintaining a lower oxygen concentration. It is used by sportsperson athletes and by high altitude mountain climber s to stimulate the body s natural adaptations to altitude, including an increase in the number of red blood cells and enzymes. Red blood cells ... climbers can avoid altitude sickness by better utilizing the diminished amount of oxygen found at higher altitudes. The basic concept of living or training at altitude is to cause the body to adapt .... Sleeping in a simulated altitude environment allows the body to achieve some of the positive adaptations to altitude while still permitting the athlete to perform workouts at an oxygen rich lower altitude where muscles can perform at their normal work level. An altitude tent is one way to enable athletes living at any elevation sleep in a high altitude like environment. A more expensive option gaining popularity amongst professional athletes is to convert their entire bedroom to altitude. 1. Meridian altitude

Meridian Altitude is an astronomical navigation method of calculating an observer s latitude . Principle This is the simplest calculation of astronomical navigation and is when an observer determines his latitude by measuring the altitude of a heavenly object at the time of its Meridian astronomy meridian passage. Meridian passage is when the object passes the observer s meridian, i.e. passes through south or north. This is usually done with the sun for a noon latitude but can be done with any heavenly object. Noon is when the sun passes through the meridian. Let us imagine that the sun is overhead at the zenith at a point on the equator latitude 0 and observer A is standing at this point, the geographical point of the sun. If he were to measure the height of the sun above the horizon with a sextant he would find that the altitude of the sun was 90 . By subtracting this figure from 90 he would find the zenith distance of the sun which is 0 , which is the same as his latitude. Observer B is standing at one of the poles latitude North Pole 90 N or South Pole 90 S he would see the sun on the horizon at an altitude of 0 . By subtracting this from 90 he would find that the zenith distance ... on the same meridian, i.e. on the same longitude as observer A. His measured altitude would be 70 and by subtracting ... distance of a heavenly object at meridian altitude is the difference in latitude between it and the observer. Methodology The estimated time of meridian altitude of the heavenly object is extracted from the nautical almanac . A few minutes before this time the observer starts observing the altitude of the object with a sextant. The altitude of the object will be increasing and the observer ... passes the meridian a maximum altitude will be observed. The time in UTC of this is observed. 1. Decompression (altitude)

refimprove date February 2012 Decompression altitude refers to the reduction in ambient pressure due to ascent above sea level. Decompression has physical effects on gas filled spaces and on liquids, particularly when they contain dissolved gases. Physiological effects of decompression are due to these physical effects and the consequential effects on the living tissues, mostly as a result of the formation and growth of bubbles, and the expansion of gas filled spaces. Formation and growth of bubbles due to reduced pressure can be due to reduction in solubility as described by Henry s Law , nucleation and growth of bubbles in supersaturated liquids and boiling of liquids when the pressure is reduced below the vapour pressure for the temperature of the liquid. Altitude decompression may be a natural consequence of unprotected elevation to altitude, or due to intentional or unintentional release of pressurisation of a pressure suit or pressurised compartment, vehicle or habitat, and may be controlled or uncontrolled decompression uncontrolled . One of the possible consequences of decompression is decompression illness , which includes decompression sickness due to bubble formation in the tissues, and barotrauma due to over expansion of gas filled spaces. These conditions are similar to those caused by decompression diving decompression after exposure to pressures higher than sea level atmospheric pressure. There is little evidence of altitude decompression occurring among healthy individuals at altitudes below convert 18000 ft m . ref cite web url http www.faa.gov pilots safety pilotsafetybrochures media dcs.pdf publisher Federal Aviation Administration title Altitude induced Decompression Sickness accessdate 2012 02 21 ref References reflist Category Aviation health stub ...   more details
