  1. Milkhemet Mitzvah

multiple issues disputed March 2008 POV March 2008 Mil emet Mitzvah or in Biblical Hebrew Mil emeth Mi wah Hebrew , War by Mitzvah commandment is the term for a war during the times of the Tanakh when a king of the Kingdom of Israel united monarchy Kingdom of Israel would go to war in order to fulfill something based on, and required by, the Torah without needing approval from a Sanhedrin , such as war against Amalek . In contrast, a milkhemet reshut , authorized war is a discretionary war, which according to Halakha Jewish law requires the permission of a Sanhedrin . Unlike milkhemet reshut wars, which tended to be fought to expand territory or for economic reasons and had exemption clauses, milhemet mitzvah tended to be invoked in defensive war s, when vital interests were at risk. Applicability in modern times The notions, terms and functions of milkhemet mitzvah and milkhemet reshut were classically utilized in the times of the Kingdoms of Kingdom of Israel Samaria Israel and Kingdom of Judah Judah . The milchemet reshut has not been applied or used since then because the Jewish people have neither a king nor universally recognized Sanhedrin, there is no religious authority to authorize a milchemet reshut . Questions about the Halakha halakhic justification for war again arise in modern times in connection to military operations of, and service in, the Israel Defense Forces . To the extent that such operations are perceived to be self defense, they are viewed as examples of milchemet mitzvah. 1. Eglon (king)

Eglon was the king of Moab who suppressed Israel in the time of the Judges. He was the head of the confederacy of Moab, Ammon and Amalek in their assault. One day, Ehud came presenting a customary tribute and tricked Eglon and stabbed him with his sword, but when Ehud attempted to draw the sword back out, the obese king s excess fat prevented its retrieval. Traditionally, it is said that some form of feces or waste issued from Eglon s stomach wound in this incident. His servants, believing he was relieving himself, left him be. Rabbis in the Talmud ic tradition claimed that Ruth biblical figure Ruth was Eglon s daughter. According to this tradition, Eglon was rewarded for rising out of respect when Ehud mentioned the Israelite God by having King David as a descendant. This can also be seen as an attempt to provide a royal lineage to David. There is, however, no basis in the actual verses for such an assertion. The Talmud also describes Eglon as the grandson of Balak. b.
