The AncientMonumentsAct 1931 was an Act of Parliament Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that aimed to improve the protection afforded to ancientmonuments in Britain. Details The AncientMonuments Protection Act 1882 had begun the process of establishing legal protection for some of Britain s ancientmonuments these had all been prehistoric sites, such as ancient tumulus tumuli . The AncientMonuments Protection Act 1900 had continued this process, empowering the government s Commissioners of Work and local County Councils to protect a wider range of properties. In 1908 a royal commission concluded that there were gaps between these two pieces of legislation, and the AncientMonuments Protection Act 1910 . These were felt to be unwieldy, and the AncientMonumentsAct repealed all three in 1913, replacing them with the new AncientMonuments Board to oversee the protection of such monuments. Powers were given for the Board, with Parliamentary approval, to issue preservation orders and to protect the lands immediately around an ancient monument. ref Mynors, pp8 9. ref The AncientMonumentsAct was passed in 1931 to deal with gaps in this system. In particular, the new act extended the definition of an ancient monument to include a cave or an underground archaeological artefact it also extended the powers of the state to manage development in the area around an ancient monument, allowing them to introduce preservation schemes to protect the wider neighbourhood. ref Mynors, p.10. ref Bibliography Mynors, Charles. 2006 http books.google.co.uk books?id XBsuBGm5AccC&printsec frontcover&source gbs ge summary r&cad 0 v onepage&q&f false Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas and Monuments. Apartheid legislation in South Africa Group AreasAct was the title of three act of parliament acts of the Parliament of South Africa enacted under the apartheid government of South Africa . The acts assigned racial group s to different residential and business sections in urban areas in a system of urban apartheid . An effect of the law was to exclude non Whites from living in the most developed areas, which were restricted to Whites e.g., Sea Point . It caused many non Whites to have to commute large distances from their homes in order to be able to work. The law led to non Whites being forcibly removed for living in the wrong areas. The non white majority were given much smaller areas to live in than the white minority who owned most of the country. Pass laws Pass Laws required that non Whites carry pass books, and later reference books ref Women s Anti Pass Law Campaigns in South Africa http africanhistory.about.com od apartheid a WomensAntiPass.htm ref similar to passports to enter the white parts of the country. The first Group AreasAct, the Group AreasAct, No. 41 of 1950 was promulgated on 7 July 1950, and it was implemented over a period of several years. It was amended by Parliament in 1952, 1955 twice , 1956 and 1957. Later in 1957 it was repealed and re enacted in consolidated form as the Group AreasAct, No. 77 of 1957 , which was amended in 1961, 1962, and and 1965. In 1966 this version was in turn repealed and re enacted as the Group AreasAct, No. 36 of 1966 , which was subsequently amended in 1969, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1982, and 1984. It was repealed along with many other discriminatory laws on 30 June 1991 by the Abolition of Racially Based Land Measures Act , No. 108 of 1991.
