Andronikos II Megas Komnenos or Andronicus II lang el , Andronikos II Megas Komn nos , c. 1240 &ndash 1266 . Emperor of Empire of TrebizondTrebizond from 1263 to 1266. He was the eldest son of Manuel I of Trebizond by his first wife, Anna Xylaloe , a Trapezuntine noblewoman. During the three years of his reign Trebizond continued to flourish as a trading centre two merchants from Marseilles were there in 1263 and 1264 carrying a letter of introduction from Charles of Anjou , Count of Provence . His reign is significant for only one thing, the loss of his father s conquest of Sinop, Turkey Sinope . Along with it, he lost a last hope of reconquest of Constantinople and ceased to impinge upon the affairs of the Byzantine Empire . According to Fallmerayer , the Mongol suzerainty accepted by Manuel I ended at the death of Hulagu Khan in 1265, but this theory is disputed and probably erroneous in view of subsequent events and the deposition of his successor George. Andronikos was succeeded by his half brother George, Emperor of Trebizond George . Irene of Trebizond or Irene Palaiologina lang el , died after 1382 was the bigamous wife of Basil of Trebizond , by whom he had two sons, Alexios and John, later Alexios III of Trebizond and possibly two daughters, Maria and Theodora. Not much is known of Irene s early life before she attained the peak of power and became the second, not altogether legal wife of Basil. Their marriage only lasted about nine months before he was murdered, presumably by his legitimate wife, Irene Palaiologina of Trebizond Irene Palaiologina , shortly before a palace coup. Palaiologina and her supporters seized power and sent her off with her two young sons, Alexios and John, off to Constantinople where they could be guarded by Palaiologina s father, AndronikosIII Palaiologos . Asen continued in the same line, and taking advantage of internal strife in Achaea, he conquered much territory in the central Morea. In 1320, he took the castles of Akova , Karytaina and St. George, and defeated a Frankish army near the latter fort in September. ref Housley 1992 , p. 168 ref He was an ancestor of later Byzantine emperors, as his granddaughter, Helena, married John V Palaiologos , whose descendants later became Byzantine emperors.
