The headless marble is a copy of a lost Greek bronze, as evidenced by an awkward tree trunk support and the failure of the total silhouette to keep manageably within the boundaries of a single block of stone , as Rhys Carpenter observes it is unlikely to postdate Nero because of its find location. ref Rhys Carpenter, Observations on Familiar Statuary in Rome , Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome 18 , Observations on Familiar Statuary in Rome 1941 25 28 . ref The date of the bronze original that it reflects is contested. 1. Collatia

File Via Collatina.jpg thumb 330px Via Collatina , from Rome to Collatia Collatia was an ancient town of central Italy , c. 15  km northeast of Rome by the Via Collatina . It appears in the legendary history of Rome as captured by Tarquinius Priscus . Virgil speaks of it as a Latin colony of Alba Longa . In the time of Cicero it had lost all importance Strabo names it as a mere village, in private hands, while for Pliny the Elder Pliny it was one of the lost cities of Latium. According to Livy , it was taken, along with its population and surrounding land, from the Sabines by Tarquinius Priscus at the conclusion of his Sabines War with Tarquinius Priscus war against them. Livy records the wording of the form of the town s surrender. ref Livy , Ab urbe condita , 1 38 ref The date of Tarquinius Roman triumph triumph over the Sabines, according to the Fasti Triumphales , which Livy says occurred shortly after the surrender of Collatia, is 13th September , 585 BC . The site is undoubtedly to be sought on the hill now occupied by the large medieval fortified farmhouse of Castello di Lunghezza immediately to the south of Aniene the Anio , which occupies the site of the citadel joined by a narrow neck to the tableland to the southeast on which the city stood this is protected by wide valleys on each side, and is isolated at the southeast end by a deep narrow valley enlarged by cutting. No remains are to be seen, but the site is admirably adapted for an ancient settlement. The road may be traced leading to the south end of this tableland, being identical with the modern road to Lunghezza for the middle part of its course only. The current identification with Castellaccio , c. 3.5  km to the southeast, is untenable. Postumus Aebutius Elva , surnamed Cornicen , was Roman consul consul at Ancient Rome Rome in 442 BC, and Master of the Horse magister equitum in 435 BC. Consulship Aebutius was elected consul for the year 442 BC, with Marcus Fabius Vibulanus . Their year of office was peaceful, and commissioners were appointed to establish a colony at Ardea RM Ardea . Many Romans wanted the colony to receive the majority of the land distributed, but it was decided to allot it first to the Rutuli , who were native to Ardea, and give the Roman colonists the remaining land. One of the commissioners was Marcus Aebutius Elva, probably a relative of the consul. ref Livy Titus Livius , Ab Urbe Condita book Ab Urbe Condita , iv. 11. ref Magister Equitum In 435 BC, a force of Fidenae Fidenates , with re inforcements from Veii , took advantage of a pestilence at Rome. They entered Roman territory, and crossing the Aniene Anio , advanced almost as far as the Porta Collina Colline Gate , when Quintus Servilius Priscus Structus was appointed Roman dictator dictator . Postumus Aebutius was named magister equitum , and the two gathered a volunteer force just outside the gate. This induced the Fidenates to retreat, but Servilius and Postumius pursued them to Fidenae. Finding that normal siege tactics would be ineffective against the fortified hilltop, the Romans breached the walls with sapper s, and took the citadel, bringing Fidenae under Roman control. ref Livy Titus Livius , Ab Urbe Condita book Ab Urbe Condita , iv. 21, 22. ref ref Diodorus Siculus , Bibliotheca historica Bibliotheca Historica , xii. 34. ref See also Aebutia gens References reflist SmithDGRBM s start succession box title List of Roman Republican consuls Consul of the Roman Republic before Marcus Geganius Macerinus and Titus Quinctius Capitolinus Barbatus after Gaius Furius Pacilus Fusus and Manius Papirius Crassus years with Marcus Fabius Vibulanus br 442 BC s end DEFAULTSORT Elva, Postumus Aebutius Category Roman Republican co ...   more details

File Cascata 9907 1.jpg left thumb The Grand Waterfall. The park, located at the feet of the city s ancient acropolis was commissioned by Pope Gregory XVI in 1835 to rebuild the bed of the Aniene River , which had been damaged by the flood of 1826 . Since ancient times, the river formed a wide curve around the acropolis, after which it fell from a limestone s spur into the plain below. The river formed originally four falls, now reduced to two. The site had a strategical importance since it commanded the transumanza path from Abruzzo along the path which later become the Via Valeria . The Romans had already built here hydraulic manufacts, 12 of which are known by findings today. It had fallen into ruins by the end of the 20th century, but was reopened to the public in 2005 thanks to a major landscape recovery project orchestrated by the FAI, the Italian National Trust . Villa Gregoriana consists mainly of thick woodlands with paths that lead to the caves of Neptune and the Sirens, which form part of a series of gorges and cascades, and to the Great Waterfall.
