Horace s Villa is a Ancient Rome Roman archaeological complex near Licenza , Italy . The identification has been made possible because Horace wrote several poems about the place, and the location of the villa corresponds to the geographical indications in the poetry. Identification It was owing to references to the Roman villa villa in Horace s writings that humanists attempted to find the site as early as the mid fifteenth century, but the site in Licenza was not considered as a possible candidate for two hundred years. This changed when an inscription mentioning a temple of the goddess Victory was found in nearby Roccagiovine . Horace tells in one of his poems Epistles 1.10 that his villa was next to the sanctuary of the Sabine goddess, Vacuna . Lucas Holstenius a mid 17th century geographer and a librarian at the Vatican Library identified the sanctuary with the temple of the goddess Victory mentioned in the inscription, and he showed that the Romans associated the Sabine deity with their goddess Victoria. A confirmation of Holstenius thesis came in 1757 with the discovery of the massa Mandelana inscription near Cantalupo Mandela, Italy Mandela , which helped antiquarians to identify yet another place name mentioned by Horace as being near his Sabine estate. Description The Aniene Valley to the east of Rome is rich with archaeological remains. The Roman villa on the east slope of the Colle Rotondo 980 meters above sea level in the Lucretili Mountains near the hilltown of Licenza is one of the best preserved and most significant sites. Attributed by most scholars since the 18th century century to the Roman poet Horace, this villa dates from the first century B.C. and is located just 30 miles from the center of Rome in a valley near Vicovaro and Hadrian s Villa at Tivoli, Italy Tivoli . The actual site was identified and a small portion was excavated in the 18th century. Major excavations were undertaken in the early 20th century. Thus far, the main residence of th ... more details

It is bordered by the Monti della Tolfa Tolfa and Monti Sabatini Sabatini mountains to the north, the Alban Hills to the southeast, and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the southwest. The River Tiber and Aniene runs through the area. During the Roman Empire Ancient Roman period, it was an important agricultural and residential area, but it was abandoned during the Middle Ages due to malaria and insufficient water supplies for farming needs. The pastoral beauty of the Campagna inspired the painters who flocked into Rome in 18th and 19th centuries. During that time, the Campagna became the most painted landscape in Europe see Gallery below . An excursion into the Roman countryside was an essential part of the Grand Tour . The region was reclaimed in the 19th and 20th centuries for use in mixed farming, and new settlements have been built. Starting with the 1950s, the expansion of Rome destroyed large parts of the Campagna, all around the city. The only continuous green area where the natural resources of the region were saved from overbuilding is along the Appian Way . Image Clerisseauanienetivoli69.jpg thumb Falls of the Aniene at Tivoli, Italy Tivoli , gouache, 1769 Victoria and Albert Museum Charles Louis Cl risseau 28 August 1721 9 January 1820 was a French architectural draughtsman, antiquary and artist. He had a role in the genesis of neoclassical architecture during the second half of the 18th century. Born in Paris , he was a pupil of the painter of ruins Giovanni Paolo Pannini and a former student at the French Academy in Rome , which he left in 1754 after a dispute with its director, Charles Joseph Natoire Natoire . In 1755 the Scottish architect Robert Adam arrived in Florence , where he met Cl risseau, who accompanied him to Rome there Adam resolved, under the spell of Cl risseau, to produce a volume for publication upon his return that would establish him as a serious architect. The project he selected was a volume documenting the ruins of Diocletian s Palace at Split city Split , easily accessible on the Dalmatian coast. Over a period of five weeks in 1757 Adam sketched and supervised the documentation of the ruins, while Cl risseau produced perspectives, and two German draftsmen undertook the measured drawings. Most of the published engravings in Adam s Ruins of the palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalato 1764 are believed to be the work of Cl risseau, though he received no credit. File Pont de gard clerisseau 1804.jpg left thumb Vue Generale du Pont du Gard , 1804 Cl risseau passed most of the next decades in Rome . As it had done since the High Renaissance , ancient Rome and modern Rome functioned as a cultural hub, the ruins of Classical Antiquity providing a school in themselves, if one had a knowledgeable guide. Cl risseau served as a mentor to a generation of young architectural students who had won the prestigious Prix de Rome for study at the French Academy in Rome and guided the developing taste for the Antique in young French and British artists and gentlemen amateurs on the Grand Tour .
