Ankam combat in Malayalam language is a fight between two professionally Kalari trained warriors at a fixed place and at an appointed time. Ankams were common in medieval Kerala, and usually stopped with the death of one of the warriors. When a dispute arise between two groups of nobles, each side in a dispute would engage warriors to fight for them. Organised single combat between two chekavar Ankachekavars . Centuries ago in Kerala , south India , quarrels between local rulers were resolved by fixing an Ankam , or duel, between two Ankachekavars, each ruler being represented by one Ankachekavar. The ruler represented by the surviving Ankachekavar was considered the winner. ref Cite book first S.N. last Sadasivan title A social history of India url http books.google.com books?id Be3PCvzf BYC&pg PA352&dq ankam malayalam&as brr 3 v onepage&q ankam&f false publisher APH Publishing year 2000 page 344 and 122 isbn 817648170X ref A war in which the chekavar Ankachekavars fought for their country. - Chanthu Chekavar
Chanthu Chekavar , also known as Chadhiyan Chanthu , is a character in Kerala folklore. He is an ignoble warrior figure of the Vadakkan Pattukal Northern Ballads who supposedly lived in the 16th century in North Kerala , in South India . According to the ballads, Chanthu was a Chekavan warrior , like his cousin Aromal Chekavar and Aromal s sister Unniyarcha . Chanthu secretly hates Aromal s family because his love for Unniyarcha was spurned. This leads to him taking part as Aromal s helper in a duel Ankam between Aromal and another chekavan. Seeing that Aromal won, Chanthu takes matters into his own hands and unexpectedly stabs his cousin to death. Henceforth, the word Chadhiyan , meaning deceiver , is added to his name to indicate his infamy. Aromal s sister Unniyarcha , herself a warrior, vows revenge for her brother s life. Revenge is finally achieved when her son Aromalunni challenges Chanthu to a duel and kills him. ref http malayalamresourcecentre.org Mrc literature folk.html History of Malayalam Literature Folk literature ref See also Unniyarcha Thacholi Othenan Chekavar Vadakkan Pattukal Kalarippayattu North Malabar References reflist Category Hindu warriors Category Malayali people Category 16th century Indian people ... more details
