  1. Ann Quin

Ann Quin born 17 Mar 1936 in Brighton , Sussex ? Aug 1973 was a British writer noted for her experimental style. The author of Berg 1964 , Three 1966 , Passages 1969 and Tripticks 1972 , she committed suicide in 1973 at the age of 37, the same year as B.S. Johnson to whom she is often compared . More recently Stewart Home has written in admiration of her work, which remains largely overlooked, although Berg was adapted for film in 1989 as Killing Dad starring Denholm Elliott and Richard E. Grant . Quin is associated with a loosely constituted circle of experimental authors in Sixties Britain, headed by B.S. Johnson and including Stefan Themerson , Rayner Heppenstall , Alan Burns and Eva Figes . Quin came from a working class family and was educated at the Convent of the Blessed Sacrament. She trained as a shorthand typist and worked in a solicitor s office, then at a publishing company when she moved to Soho and began writing novels. Her first, Berg, was published by John Calder in 1964. Image QuinAbbey.jpg thumb 300px Quin Abbey Quin Abbey in Ireland was built between 1402 and 1433 by Sioda Cam MacNamara, for Fathers Purcell and Mooney, friars of the Franciscan order, in Quin, County Clare . Although mostly roofless, the structure of the abbey is relatively well preserved. There is an intact cloister, and many other surviving architectural features make the abbey of significant historical value. ref 75th Annual Report of the Commissioners of Public Works in Ireland Clonmacnois, King s County. Dublin A. Thom & Co, 1906 ref A far earlier monastery had existed on the site, which burned down in 1278. A Norman architecture Norman castle was built soon after by Thomas de Clare, a military commander. ref Brian Hodkinson, Was Quin Castle Completed? , North Munster Antiquarian Journal , Vol. 44, 2004, pp.53 8 ref . The foundations of the castle s enormous corner towers can still be seen. Around 1350 the castle, by then a ruin, was rebuilt as a church by the McNamara clan. It was this structure which the MacNamaras subsequently rebuilt as the present abbey. In 1541, during the English Reformation Reformation , Henry VIII of England King Henry VIII confiscated the abbey and it passed into the hands of Conor O Brian, Earl of Thomond. In about 1590 the MacNamaras regained control of the abbey and once again set about repairing and restoring it. In about 1640 the building became a college and is alleged to have had 800 students. Oliver Cromwell arrived only 10 years later, murdering the monks and destroying the abbey. In 1671 the abbey was once again restored, but never regained its former status. Eventually in 1760 the monks were expelled, although the last Friar, John Hogan, remained there until his death in 1820, by which time the buildings were ruined by neglect ...
