  1. Michael Alford

about the Jesuit missionary the British artist Michael Alford artist Michael Alford 1587 11 August 1652 was an English Jesuit missionary. He left two major works, Britannia Illustrata , Annales Ecclesiastici et Civiles Britannorum also known as Annales Ecclesiae Britannicae . Michael Alford was born in London in 1587. He became a Jesuit missionary and was assigned duties in Europe while still a student at Seville and University of Leuven Leuven . Subsequently he was assigned to be a minister to British sailors in Naples , and later as rector at the Jesuit college in Ghent . Late in 1628 or perhaps the subsequent year, he was sent to the English mission. Upon landing at Dover he was mistakenly arrested on suspicion of being Father Richard Smith , Bishop of Chalcedon , for whose apprehension the government had offered a reward. His captors conveyed him to London, but as his person in no respect corresponded with the description of the bishop, he was restored to liberty . The county of Leicester became the chief district of Father Alford s missionary work. In 1636 he was appointed rector of the Residence of St Anne, comprising the county of Leicester. He resided at Holt, where he employed his leisure in composing his learned works. In order to put the finishing stroke to his Annales Ecclesiae Britannicae he obtained leave to retire to the College of St. Omer in the spring of 1652, and while there he was attacked by a fever, from which he died on 11 August in the same year DNB . Martial writes of Pudens marriage to Claudia Peregrina Claudia the Foreigner in Epigrams IV 13, who is likely identical with Claudia Rufina , a Briton he writes of in Epigrams XI 53. Martial also writes of Pudens s passions for young male slaves, his desire to own original copies of Martial s poems, and his ambitions of being promoted to Primus Pilus , the chief centurion of a Roman legion . 1. Odorico Raynaldi

Odorico Raynaldi or Rinaldi 1595 &ndash 22 January 1671 , was an Italy Italian historian and Oratory of Saint Philip Neri Oratorian . He is also known as Odericus Raynaldus , or just Raynald . Raynaldi was born at Treviso of a patrician family. He studied at Parma and Padua , joined the Oratorians in Rome, and, distinguished for his piety, beneficence, and scholarship, was twice elected superior general of his congregation. He was entrusted with the continuation of the Annales ecclesiastici of Baronius . After the publication of the first volume, he was offered the direction of the Vatican library by Innocent X, an honour which he declined. He died at Rome . His continuation of Baronius extends from 1198 to 1565 and was published at Rome, 1646 77. He was the ablest continuator of the great historian. Although his work is marred here and there by inaccurate chronological data and lack of criticism, the numerous original documents which it reproduces render it very valuable. 1. Tomaso Malvenda

Tomaso Malvenda Jativa , Valencia, Spain Valencia , 1566 &ndash 7 May 1628 was a Spanish Dominican Order Dominican exegete and historical critic. Life He entered the Dominicans in his youth at the age of thirty five he seems to have already taught philosophy and theology. His criticisms on the Annales Ecclesiastici of Baronius , embodied in a letter to the letter to the author 1600 , showed ability, and Baronius used his influence to have Malvenda summoned to Rome. Here he was an adviser to the cardinal, while also employed in revising the Dominican Breviary, annotating Brasichelli s ref Brasichellen ref Index Expurgatorius , and writing some annals of the order they were published against his wishes and without his revision . To this period also belong his Antichristo libri XI Rome, 1604 , and De paradiso voluptatis Rome, 1605 . Returning to Spain in 1608, Malvenda undertook a new version of the Old Testament in Latin, with commentaries. This he had carried as far as Ezechiel, xvi, 16, when he died. It gives a rendering into Latin of every word in the original but many of the Latin words employed are intelligible only through equivalents supplied in the margin. The work was published at Lyon in 1650 as Commentaria in S.
