italictitle The Annales guelferbytani AG , rarely Guelferbytan Annals are a set of Medieval Latin Latin annals covering the years 741 805 with added notices for 817 and 823 that were composed in Regensburg , the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria , in 812 13. They are found in a manuscript called August, O, 67.5 of the ducal library of Wolfenb ttel , which contains fourteen folios, though folio 13r was added later in 826 and folios 13v 14v later still. The AG form one of the Reichsannalen , a series of eighth century annals devoted, broadly, to contemporary events across Francia . For the years up to 751 the AG share a source with the Annales nazariani AN and the Annales alamannici AA in the lost so called Murbach Annals from Murbach Abbey . This source also gave rise to the Annaleslaureshamenses , the Annales mosellani , and the Fragmentum chesnii by another route. The AG also share a continuation with the AN and AA up to 789. After that they are an anonymous, independent source. They inform us of an expedition by Pepin of Italy against the Principality of Benevento ordered by his father, Charlemagne , in 791 after the two returned from a joint expedition against the Wends and Hunia the land of the Huns, i.e., Avaria . The Annales maximi were annals kept by the Pontifex maximus in the Roman Republic . The chief priest of the Capitoline would record key public events and the names of each of the magistrates. He would keep a detailed record and publish an abbreviated version on a white board tabula dealbata outside the Regia . Cicero refers to the practice explicitly, and Cato the Elder Cato condemned the apparent triviality and superstition of it as well as the fact that it kept track of bad news, such as famines . The earliest records were accounts of mythological events, which gave credence to Cato s rejection. However, early Roman historian s used the annales maximi extensively, and legitimate records went, according to Cicero, to 400 BC . By the time of the Gracchi 130 BC , when the annal ceased, it filled eighty books. The collection was published by pontifex Maximus Publius Mucius Scaevola . References Cornell, Tim J. Entry for the year 855 Earthquake at Mainz The Annales Fuldenses or Annals of Fulda are East Francia East Frankish chronicles that cover independently the period from the last years of Louis the Pious died 840 to shortly after the end of effective Carolingian rule in East Francia with the accession of the child king, Louis the Child Louis III , in 900. Throughout this period they are a near contemporary record of the events they describe and a primary source for Carolingian historiography. They are usually read as a counterpart to the narrative found in the West Frankish Annales Bertiniani . Authorship and manuscripts The Annals were composed at the Abbey of Fulda in Franconia . A note in one manuscript has been taken to prove that the entries down to 838 were composed by Einhard Enhard in the MS , yet it has been convincingly argued that this might only have been a copyist s Colophon publishing colophon that has abusively entered the manuscript tradition, a sort of accident far from uncommon in medieval scriptoria . Be that as it may, a second note sets on more solid grounds the attribution of the annals down to 864 to Rudolf of Fulda , whose manuscript, though not conserved, is mentioned in independent sources and has left traces in the tradition. Some scholars believe that the whole work was first put together by an unknown compiler only in the 870s. context date January 2010 notability Book date January 2010 The core text of the Annales Alamannici covers the years 709 through to 799. Spread over several Swabia n monasteries, the annals were continued independently in several places, in the Reichenau Island Reichenau Abbey up to 939 continued by Hermannus Contractus , in St. Gallen up to 926. The Abbey of St. Gall St. Gallen version was continued from 927 to 1059 as the Annales Sangallenses maiores . The Annales Almannici are also referred to as the Annals of St. Gall and provide one of the earliest records of Medieval Europe available 1 . They are notable for their short, cursory style and limited narrative. To the modern scholar, they might appear to be incomplete, and for that reason, of limited value. However, in recent years, historians such as Hayden White have argued that the style of the chronicles depict a worldview that is distinctly medieval where things happen to people rather than one in which people do things. For that reason, they provide insight into the medieval mind and what things the people of the Dark Ages considered important 2 . Sources Annales Alamannici , ed. W. Annales Bertiniani , or The Annals of St. Bertin , are late Carolingian , Franks Frankish annals that were found in the monastery of St. Bertin , after which they are named. Their account is taken to cover the period 830 82, thus continuing the Royal Frankish Annals 741 829 , from which, however, it has circulated independently in only one manuscript. italictitle The Annales Mettenses priores or Earlier Annals of Metz are a set of Reichsannalen covering the period from the rise of Pepin of Heristal in Austrasia c. 675 to the time of the writing c. 805 , surviving as part of a wider compilation including, among other texts, the full entries of the Royal Frankish Annals for the years 806 829. The Annales were probably composed at the monastery of Chelles Abbey Chelles towards 806 under the direction of Gisela of the Franks, Abbess at Chelles Abbey Gisela , the sister of Charlemagne . Paul Fouracre and Richard Gerberding have rejected this hypothesis on the grounds that the Annales displays a misogynistic virulence towards Plectrude , but considering her part in thwarting the succession of Charles Martel , this may be unsurprising coming from Charles Martel s granddaughter according to Rosamond McKitterick . The purpose of the composition was probably to justify the impending divisio regnorum division of the kingdom among Charlemagne s sons. The Annales were concerned to justify the Carolingian ruling house and lay stress to the idea of God s plan unfolding in the Carolingian rise to power, while simultaneously denigrating the former Merovingian dynasty. They were deeply concerned with the inheritance of Charlemagne s eldest son, Charles the Younger . The earliest incident the Annales records is the murder of Gundoin by Pepin probably in the 670s. This story is found in no other written source and is commonly taken as legend. Gundoin supposedly murdered Pepin s father Ansegisel and then Pepin, when he was of age, tracked down and killed Gundoin, and seized power in Austrasia. According to the Annales , which is the earliest source for the Merovingian decline , the king Theuderic III had become oppressive and unjust, thus forcing Pepin to invade his kingdom and defeat him in the great Battle of Tertry . Thereafter, we are told ... Latin histories Category Carolingian Latin literature cs Annales Mettenses priores ru ... more details
