  1. Fragmentum chesnii

italictitle File Annales laureshamenses textual transmission chart.PNG 300px thumb How the Fragmentum fits into the textual transmission of the Annales laureshamenses Collins 2005, 59, fig. 4 . The Fragmentum annalium chesnii or chesnianum , sometimes called the Annales Laureshamenses antiquiores , is a brief set of Reichsannalen describing the history of Francia during the years 768 to 790. It is named after Andr Duchesne Andreas Chesneus , who first edited and published it in his book Historiae Francorum scriptores 1 21 23 in 1636. It has been re edited by Georg Heinrich Pertz for the Monumenta Germaniae Historica , Scriptores I, 33 34 Hanover 1826 . ref Published alongside the Annales laureshamenses in the same volume, pp. 19 39. ref For the years up to 785, the Fragmentum is textually almost identical with the Annales laureshamenses AL and the Annales mosellani AM . With a manuscript of the former from Abbey of Sankt Paul im Lavanttal Sankt Paul it shares an identical entry for the first half of the year 786. This indicates the existence of a stem text from which all three sets of annals derive the Lorsch Annals of 785 and the existence of a brief continuation of this text that was not used by the compiler of the AM but which bequeathed a short entry for 786 to both the Fragmentum and the AL , which diverge completely after that. The major divergence of the texts before the year 786 is in the mention of events related to the Abbey of Lorsch , which were probably found in the exemplar the Lorsch Annals of 785 and retained in the AL , but have all been excised from the Fragmentum which was probably not compiled at Lorsch . ref Most references to Lorsch have also been omitted ... the Chronicle of Fredegar and a section of the Annales regni francorum years 791 806 in a late .... 213, fols. 149 51 . In the manuscript there is no division between the Fragmentum and the Annales ... may be explained by the centralisation of the historiography in the authorised Annales regni francorum ...   more details

  1. Cellanus

Cellanus fl. ca. 675 706 was the abbot of P ronne, Somme P ronne in Picardy . At the time, P ronne was known as Perrona Scottorum on account of its fame as a home to Irish peregrini . He was a penfriend and correspondent of Aldhelm , and it is from a surviving letter that much of our knowledge of Cellanus originates. Ludwig Traube believed him to be identical with the Abbot Cellanus who s obit is recorded in the Annales Laureshamenses under 706 and was probably the Cellan mac Sechnusaigh, sapiens , recorded in the same year in the Annals of Ulster pp.96 119, 1900 . Traube furthermore attributed two hexameter poems to Cellanus Traube, pp.105 08, 1900 . Panegyric to Saint Patrick Cellanus was thought to have been the composer of a panegyric in honour of Saint Patrick after the manner of Virgil , which was inscribed on the walls of a basilica at Peronne which was dedicated to Patrick. However, Lapidge 1994 pp 110 15, attributes this to Abbot Boniface. Against this, Hoffmann 2001 p 17 and Howlett 1998 p 38 , think the poem is probably Hiberno Latin . On this subject, Charles D. Wright states quote One of these items ... consists of verses for a chapel or oratory aula dedicated to PATRICK, BISHOP OF THE IRISH ... . Traube attributed the poem whose author was certainly Irish to Cellanus because in the other surviving copy it is followed ... by the poem Quid Vermendensis memorem tot milia plebis ... in which Cellanus names himself as well as his diocesan bishop, Transmarus of Noyon . Traube left open the possibility that Cellanus merely commissioned the poem, since the lines Haec modo Cellanus, uenerandi nominis abbas, Iussit dactilico discriui carmina uersu 9 10 are ambiguous. Coccia thinks it more likely that the lines mean that Cellanus commissioned the poem, and also doubts that Cellanus himself would refer to himself so immodestly. ... Traube s attribution of the poem on St Patrick which depends on the attribution of the one about P ronne has also been questioned, chi ...   more details

  1. Royal Frankish Annals

The Royal Frankish Annals or Annals of the Kingdom of the Franks lang la Annales regni Francorum , formerly known as Annales Laurissenses maiores and styled Reichsannalen in German historiography , are annals covering the history of early Carolingian monarchs from 741 to 829. Their composition seems to have soon been taken up at court, providing them with markedly official character. 19th century editors assumed the text to have existed in five versions, which they dated to different moments during early Carolingians rule. In particular, a revision of the annals was attributed to Franks Frankish historian Einhard c. 775 840 therefore Annales qui dicuntur Einhardi , though a really convincing argument for his authorship is wanting. More recently, however, this whole picture has been deeply challenged and a strong case has been made by scholars that the annals, though composed at different phases, may have been edited altogether at a later stage. ref cf. R. Collins, The Reviser Revisited Another Look at the Alternative Version of the Annales Regni Francorum, in A. C. Murray ed. , After ... of Charlemagne . They have been continued in the West Frankish Annales Bertiniani and largely but not always literally employed by the early compilers of the East Frankish Annales Fuldenses . Notes ... ed.
