    The College of Emergency Medicine CEM is an organization of emergency physician s in the United Kingdom which sets standards of training and administers examinations for emergency physicians in the United Kingdom and Ireland . Entrance criteria The College sets two examinations , the Fellowship of the College of Emergency Medicine FCEM , and the Membership of the College of Emergency Medicine MCEM . Trainees who pass the MCEM are eligible to join a specialist registrar training program in emergency medicine. Doctors who complete this training program may sit the FCEM examination and may be recommended by the College for Certificate of Completion of Training CCT in Emergency Medicine. The College holds annual scientific meetings for members. The current president of the College is John Heyworth. History The Faculty of Accident and Emergency Medicine was inaugurated on 2nd November 1993 , and conducted the first FFAEM examination in October 1996 . Emergency medicine EM has been a recognized medical specialty in the United States and other developed countries for over twenty years. The term international emergency medicine generally refers to the transfer of skills and knowledge from developed EM systems to those systems which are less developed including knowledge of ambulance operations. In most developing countries, steps are being taken to develop EM as a specialty, to develop accreditation mechanisms, and to promote the development of emergency medicine training programs. International emergency medicine is a sub specialty of emergency medicine, and there are several IEM Fellowships in the US, where residency trained emergency physicians obtain advanced training in international skills and systems development.     Unreferenced date May 2009 The Fellowship of the College of Emergency Medicine FCEM is the exit examination taken by specialists in Emergency Medicine formerly Accident and Emergency Medicine in the United Kingdom and Ireland . The examination was previously known as the Fellowship of the Faculty of Accident and Emergency Medicine FFAEM . In order to be eligible to take the examination, candidates are normally required to have completed four years out of a five year specialist registrar rotation in Emergency Medicine. There are four elements in the examination. The clinical component makes up 50 of the marks and is divided between a Short Answer Question SAQ paper and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination OSCE . Both clinical components must be passed at the same diet. The management component makes up 25 of the marks, and an academic component the remaining 25 divided equally between a Clinical Topic Review CTR and a Critical Appraisal of a paper from the current medical literature usually a Randomized controlled trial Randomised controlled trial , a Systematic review or a diagnostic paper . The examination is held twice a year and the SAQ is held one month before the rest of the examination. Admission to Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine requires satisfactory completion of a minimum of seven years of post graduate medical training, including multiple examinations and presentation of a research project or equivalent coursework . Maintenance of fellowship requires ongoing professional training as evidenced by the Maintenance of Professional Standards MOPS program which the college also administers. The ACEM is an incorporated educational institution whose prime objective is the training and examination of specialist emergency physicians for Australia and New Zealand. ACEM has a vital interest in the quality of emergency medical care provided to the community and therefore has a wide range of subsidiary objectives relating to emergency department accreditation, policies and standards for the emergency medical system, teaching and research, publication, and those aspects of the medico political framework that have a direct impact on health outcomes for emergency patients. ACEM was incorporated in 1984 and in August 1993 the Australian Minister for Health approved the recognition of emergency medicine as a principal specialty.
