Unreferenced date January 2009 The Annals of the Chosen is a trilogy by Lawrence Watt Evans . The trilogy is set in the world of Barokan. All magic in Barokan is based on ler . Magic is broken into two types. Ler of the first type are linked to a specific object. There are ler of plants, places, animals and things. Priests negotiate with these ler so that people can live in peace with them. Some ler can be very demanding. The second type of ler are not linked to any specific place and can be more abstract in nature. Wizardry is related to these ler . However, unlike priests, wizards don t negotiate. They control these ler by binding them to talismans. Barokan is ruled by a powerful wizard called the Wizard Lord. A group of wizards called the Council of Immortals select the Wizard Lord, who then reigns until death or he chooses to resign. The source of the Wizard Lord s power is a collection of talismans, given to him by the Council of Immortals, that make him much more powerful than the other wizards. The Wizard Lord is responsible for dealing with any wizard that goes rogue and attacks the general population. He also provides some public services like weather control. Since the Wizard Lord s talismans make him extremely powerful, a problem occurs if the Wizard Lord himself goes rogue. The Short Annals of Tirconaill is an Irish annal, with entrys dating from 1241 to 1650, but with numerous gaps, such as 1241 to 1423. Its authors are unknown Paul Walsh speculated that it had several scribes over the course of some four hundred years, ending in 1650 or the years immediately after. They were compiled in the kingdom of Osraige , probably in the lifetime of Donnchad mac Gilla P traic died 1039 , king of Osraige and of king of Leinster . The Fragmentary Annals were copied in 1643 for the Rev. John Lynch by Dubhaltach Mac Fhirbhisigh from a lost 15th century vellum manuscript, which belonged to Giolla na Naomh Mac Aodhag in Nehemias MacEgan . Mac Aodhag in, who died around 1443, was a professor of Irish Brehon Law in Earl of Ormond Irish Ormond . The sole surviving manuscript of the Fragmentary Annals, which is currently held by the Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels , is not in Mac Fhirbhisigh s hand, but in that of an anonymous scribe, who made a fair copy of Mac Fhirbhisigh s text, adding some marginal comments of his own and an index. The manuscript MS. 7, c. n. 17 is incomplete and includes five fragments of annals beginning in 573 and ending in 914. What has survived joins the synopsis of the hypothetical Chronicle of Ireland .
