  1. Seasonally adjusted annual rate

The Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate SAAR refers to the rate adjustment employed when drawing comparisons between various sets of statistics statistical data . As the name suggests, it takes into account fluctuations of values in such data which might occur due to seasonality. Such data would be affected by the time of the year and hence the season and thus it would be misleading to draw comparisons month to month all year long. An example would be occupancy rates of ski resort s, which would by default be higher during winter as compared to summer. Sales between these two seasons can only be fairly compared through seasonally adjusted rates. The SAAR is calculated by dividing the unadjusted annual rate for the month by its seasonality factor and creating an adjusted annual rate for the month. These adjustments are more often used when economic data is released to the public. 1. Percentage point

Unreferenced date June 2009 A percentage point pp is the unit measurement unit for the arithmetic difference of two percentage s. Consider the following hypothetical example In 1980, 40 percent of the population smoked, and in 1990 only 30 percent smoked. We can thus say that from 1980 to 1990, the incidence of smoking decreased by 10 percentage points even though smoking did not decrease by 10 percent actually it decreased by 25 percent &ndash percentages indicate ratios, not differences. Statements such as between 1980 and 1990, the smoking rate decreased twice as much as the lung cancer rate are ambiguous it is not clear whether percentages or percentage points are being compared. Percentage points are also used to express the difference of risks or probabilities . Consider for instance a certain drug, which cures a given disease in 70 percent of all cases without the drug, the disease heals spontaneously in only 50 percent of cases. The drug thus causes an absolute risk reduction of 20 percentage points. Here the Multiplicative inverse reciprocal is especially meaningful and is known as the number needed to treat NNT 1 20 1 0.20 5 if you treat 5 patients with the drug, you can expect to heal one more case of the disease than you would have without using the drug. For measurements with percentage as unit, like growth, yield finance yield , or ejection fraction , the standard deviation will have percentage points as unit. Mistakenly using percentage as the unit for the standard deviation is confusing since percentage is also used as a unit for the relative standard deviation, i.e., the standard deviation divided by the average value. 1. Percentage in point

In finance , a percentage in point pip is the smallest commonly quoted change of an exchange rate of a currency pair . The major currencies, except the Japanese yen , are priced to four decimal places. For these currencies a pip is one unit of the fourth decimal point, or 1 100th of one percent. For the Japanese yen, a pip refers to one unit in the second decimal point, because the yen is much closer in value to one hundredth of other major currencies. This would be different for the other currencies. Trading value A rate change of one pip may be related to the value change of a position in a currency market. Currency is typically traded in lot size of gaps 100 000 units of the base currency. A trading position of one lot that experiences a rate change of 1 pip therefore changes in value by 10 units of the quoted currency. ref cite book last1 Archer first1 Michael D. last2 Bickford first2 James L. title Getting Started in Currency Trading Winning in Today s Hottest Marketplace publisher John Wiley & Sons date May 25, 2005 location Hoboken, New Jersey isbn 978 0471713036 ref Example If the currency pair of the Euro vs. the U.S. Dollar EUR USD is trading at an exchange rate of 1.3000 1 EUR 1.3 USD and the rate changes to 1.3010, the price ratio increased by 10 pips. 1. Stolen base percentage

Stolen base percentage is a statistic used in baseball . A player s stolen base percentage aka SB measures his rate of success in stealing bases. Because stolen bases tend to help a team less than times caught stealing hurt, a player needs to have a high stolen base percentage in order to contribute much value to his team. A commonly used figure is that a player needs to succeed about 2 3 of the time to break even. Formula SB Stolen Bases Stolen Bases Caught Stealing With 300 minimum career attempts, Carlos Beltr n currently holds the record for highest Stolen base percentage in the Major League Baseball Major Leagues , with .881, with Tim Raines in second, with .847. Total Baseball developed a statistic related to stolen base percentage called Stolen Base Runs or SBR. .3 x Stolen Bases .6 x Caught Stealing This Total Baseball statistic is aimed at quantifying base stealing. Numerous statistical studies done by Total Baseball have shown that the break even success rate for steals the rate at which an attempt to steal is neither helping nor hurting the team in terms of total runs scored is about 67 . Each successful steal adds approximately .3 runs to a team s total runs scored which is much less than often believed. Therefore, the statistic is meant to estimate the impact of base stealers, which, other than the elite base stealers, rarely amounts to more than a few runs per year for each team.
