  1. Anselm of Capraia

Anselm of Capraia was a Pisa n count. His political activity extended from the Republic of Pisa to Sardinia . Anselm was the son of Berthold, brother of William of Capraia William and Anselm, all three of whom went to the court of Peter II of Arborea to be educated. Anselm s mother was a daughter of Guelfo della Gherardesca , Count of Donoratico , and Uguccionella degli Uppezinghi. Anselm was sent by the Commune of Pisa in 1273 to Gallura to fight against the judge John Visconti Giovanni Visconti , who had fled from Pisa recently. He defeated him in the hard to defend open plain between Trexenta and Gippi . Anselm occupied the House of Visconti Visconti estates, but it is not known if only those in the Giudicato curatoria of Gippi or those in the third of Giudicato of Cagliari Cagliari which Giovanni had acquired as well. However, Giovanni evaded capture and returned to Tuscany on a Kingdom of Sicily Sicilian ship. Anselm took over the reins of government in the Giudicato of Arborea after the imprisonment and assassination of his cousin Nicholas of Capraia Nicholas by the real judge, Marianus II of Arborea Marianus II . He attacked Marianus and tried to take over Cagliari, but was defeated and killed in 1287. Anselm was married to Teccia, daughter of Gherardo della Gherardesca and Theodora, and niece of Ugolino della Gherardesca Ugolino . He left one son, Anselm, who was reputed to be chivalrous and gracious. On account of jealousy for the affection of the Pisan populace, Ugolino had him poisoned. Ugolino may have even feared that the Pisans would choose to replace him with Anselm. This story is the basis for the passing mention of Anselm in Dante Alighieri Dante s Divine Comedy Inferno where Anselm is not resident, but Ugolino is . 1. Anselm of Laon

Anselm of Laon died 1117 was a France French theology theologian and founder of a school of scholars who helped to pioneer biblical hermeneutics . Remembered in the century after his death as Anselmus or Anselm , his name was more properly Ansellus or, in Modern French, Anseau. Born of very humble parents at Laon before the middle of the 11th century, he is said to have studied under Anselm of Canterbury Saint Anselm at Bec Abbey Bec , though this is almost certainly incorrect. Other potential teachers of Anselm have been identified, including Bruno of Cologne and Manegold of Lautenbach . By ca. 1080, he had moved back to his place of birth and was teaching at the cathedral school of Laon, with his brother Ralph. In ca. 1109 he became dean and chancellor of the cathedral, and in 1115 he was one of Laon s two archdeacons. His school for theology and exegesis rapidly became the most famous in Europe. Famously, in 1113 he expelled Pierre Ab lard from his school. The Liber Pancrisi c. 1120 names him, with Ivo of Chartres and William of Champeaux , as one of the three modern masters. 1. Anselm of Liège

Anselm of Li ge 1008 c. 1056 was a chronicler of the eleventh century of the Prince Bishopric of Li ge . ref http www.newadvent.org cathen 01550c.htm Catholic Encyclopedia article, source ref He was educated at the episcopal school of Li ge , and became canon and dean of the cathedral, where he enjoyed the friendship of the bishop of Li ge , Wazo . His chronicle, regarded as one of the best of the period, both for literary merit and for historical value, is known as the Gesta Episcoporum Tungrensium, Trajectensium, et Leodiensium , and is a continuation of the earlier work of Heriger of Lobbes d. 1007 . That had dealt with the first twenty seven bishops, from St. Maternus 90 to Remaclus 680 . Anselm s work, written at the request of his godmother, the countess Ida, Abbess of St. Cecilia, Cologn e, added the lives of twenty five more bishops, down to Wazo, of whom he gave a very full and particular account. The Gesta is to be found in the Monumenta Germani Historica Scriptores, VII, 161 234 also ibid., XIV, 107 120 1883 . Anselm s style is clear, and his zeal for church reform is equalled by his critical intelligence. 1. Anselm of Farfa

Anselm Zelmo was the Abbot of Farfa between 881 and 883, succeeding John I of Farfa John I . ref Marino Marini, http books.google.ca books?id F0Q AAAAcAAJ Serie cronologica degli abati del monastero di Farfa Dissertazione epistolare Rome 1836 , 13, records the opinion of Father Giancolombino Fatteschi that Anselm s abbacy began in 872, and also the belief that it began in 878, but he dismisses both dates as baseless. ref His short abbacy is reasonably well sourced compared to the string of five abbots following him, beginning with Teuto , who were extremely obscure figures even to Gregory of Catino , the abbey s historian of the eleventh century. ref Marios Costambeys, Power and Patronage in the Early Medieval Italy Local Society, Italian Politics, and the Abbey of Farfa, c .700 900 Cambridge 2007 , 162n. ref In 883 Farfa received a privilege of greatest freedom praeceptum optimae libertatis and a grant of various properties from the Emperor Charles the Fat . This, the last Carolingian grant to Farfa, is dated only to the year and does not name the abbot. It may have been Anselm, but more probably was Teuto. ref Marini, 13. ref Charles chief concern seems to have been the depredations of the Duke Guy II of Spoleto and other evil men pravi homines then in rebellion against him. ref Costambeys, 345. ref He granted several similar temporarily successful privileges to other central Italian institutions in the summer of 883 during the height of the challenge to his authority.
