File Antoine Forqueray.jpg thumb right AntoineForqueray. AntoineForqueray September 1671 28 June 1745 was a French composer and virtuoso of the viola da gamba . Forqueray, born in Paris, was the first in a line of composers who included his brother Michel 1681 1757 and his sons Jean Baptiste Forqueray Jean Baptiste 1699 1782 and Nicolas Gilles 1703 1761 . Forqueray was named musicien ordinaire of La chambre du Roy of Louis XIV of France Louis XIV in 1689 and played at court. Until 1710, he was accompanied by his wife on the harpsichord in his recitals. In 1730, he retired to Mantes la Jolie , where he died in 1745. His son published his works for the viola de gamba in 1747 two years after his father s death together with a version for harpsichord. Marin Marais and AntoineForqueray were considered by their contemporaries as the two greatest virtuosi of the viola da gamba. References The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians , ed. Jean Baptiste Forqueray 3 April 1699 &ndash August 1782 , the son of AntoineForqueray , was a player of the viol and a composer . Forqueray was born in Paris . He is most famous today for his 1747 publication of twenty nine pieces for viol and Figured bass continuo which he attributed to his father except for three, which he himself took credit for . In the advertissements he states that he was responsible for the bass line thus the figures as well and the viol fingerings. Stylistically, they are very much influenced by Italian music and belong to the generation of Jean Marie Leclair 1697 1764 and Jean Pierre Guignon 1702 1774 . Modern violists regard these Pieces de Viole as the most virtuosic music for the instrument. Only Paolo Pandolfo has attempted to record the complete publication. Forqueray arranged the same pieces for harpsichord and published these in 1749 ed. Colin Tilney , Paris, 1970 but remarkably did not Transposition music transpose any of the music, so the melodies lie relatively low in the range of the harpsichord. Antoine Parent September 16, 1666 September 26, 1716 was a France French mathematician , born at Paris and died there, who wrote in 1700 on analytical geometry of three dimensions. His works were collected and published in three volumes at Paris in 1713. In 1713 Antoine Parent derived the correct formula for bending of cantilever beams. He correctly assumed a central neutral axis and linear stress distribution from tensile at the top face to equal and opposite compression at the bottom, thus deriving a correct elastic section modulus of the cross sectional area times the section depth divided by six. Unfortunately Parent s work had little impact, and it was many more years before scientific principals were regularly applied to the analysis of the strength of beams in bending.
