  1. Apollinaris (the Elder)

orphan date January 2008 Apollinaris the Elder was a Christian grammarian of the 4th century, first in Berytus now Beirut in Phoenicia , then in Laodicea in Syria . He was the father of Apollinaris of Laodicea . He became a priest, and was among the staunchest upholders of the First Council of Nicaea Council of Nic a 325 and of St. Athanasius . When the Emperor Julian the Apostate forbade Christian professors to lecture or comment on the poets or philosophers of Greece 362 , Apollinaris and his son both strove to replace the literary masterpieces of antiquity by new works which should offset the threatened loss to Christians of the advantages of polite instruction and help to win respect for the Christian religion among non Christians. According to Socrates of Constantinople Hist. Eccl. , II, xlvi III, xvi , the elder Apollinaris translated the Pentateuch into Greek hexameter s, converted the first two books of Kings into an epic poem of twenty four canto s, wrote tragedies modelled on Euripides , comedies after the manner of Menander , and ode s imitated from Pindar . Sozomen Hist. Eccl. , V, xviii VI, xxv says nothing of the poetical works of the elder Apollinaris, but lays stress on those of his son. This improvised Greek literature, however, did not survive. As soon as Jovian emperor Jovian 363 364 had revoked the edict of Julian the schools returned to the great classic writers, and only the memory of the efforts of Apollinaris survived. 1. Laodicea Combusta

Laodicea lang el , more commonly Laodicea Combusta lang el , Laodikeia Katakekaumen , Laodicea the Burned and later known as Claudiolaodicea &ndash was a Hellenistic city in central Anatolia , in the region of Pisidia its site is currently occupied by Ladik Konya Province Ladik , Konya Province , in the Asia n part of Turkey . Laodicea was one of the five cities built by Seleucus I Nicator , and named after his mother Laodice of Macedonia Laodice . Its surname lang la Combusta is derived by Strabo ref xii. pp. 576, 579, xiii. pp. 626, 628, 637. ref from the volcanic nature of the surrounding country, but Hamilton ref Researches , ii. p. 194. ref asserts that there is not a particle of volcanic or igneous rock in the neighbourhood and it may be added that if such were the case, the town would rather have been called, in Greek, Laodikeia t s katakekaumen s. The most probable solution undoubtedly is, that the town was at one time destroyed by fire, and that on being rebuilt it received the distinguishing surname. It was situated to the northwest of Iconium now Konya , on the high road leading from the west coast to Melitene on the Euphrates . Some ancient authors describe it as situated in Lycaonia ref Stephanus of Byzantium s. v. Strabo xiv. p. 663. ref and others as a town of Pisidia , ref Socrates, Hist. Eccl. vi. 18 Hierocles author of Synecdemus Hierocles p. 672. ref , and Ptolemy ref v. 4. 10. ref places it in Galatia but this discrepancy is easily explained by recollecting that the territories just mentioned were often extended or reduced in extent, so that at one time the town belonged to Lycaonia, while at another it formed part of Pisidia. Its foundation is not mentioned by any ancient writer. Laodiceia is at Ladik and numerous fragments ...
