  1. Apollon of Olympia

Image Zeus temple in Olimpia, frontone west, Apollo.jpg thumb Apollon of Olympia The Apollon of Olympia was part of the group of sculptures found in the west pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. Its original location also provides it with another name the Apollon from the west pediment . It is one of the most important statues of the Severe style or early Classical sculpture Classical style, dating from ca. 460 Common Era BCE . The statue is currently in the archaeological museum in Olympia. The sculptures of the west pediment depicted the battle of the Lapith s against the Centaur s, following the wedding feast of Peirithous and Hippodamia wife of Pirithous Hippodamia . The battle of the Lapiths legendary inhabitants of Thessaly against the Centaurs wild forest inhabitants with a human upper half and the body of a horse frequently acted as a mythological metaphor for the conflicts between the Ancient Greece Greeks and the Barbarian s. Most of the figures in this turbulent battle scene were discovered during the German excavations of 1875, led by the archaeologist Georg Treu . The juvenile Apollo stood in the centre of the pediment, directing his gaze toward the Lapiths. With his outstretched right arm, he seemed to order an end to the iniquity the Centaurs had betrayed the Lapiths hospitality, drunk to excess, and kidnapped their women. Nevertheless, his inclusion appears to be merely figurative the combatants seem ignorant of his presence, with no other figure in the pediment referring, either in their motion or gesture, to the appearance of the god. The back of the sculpture, which had not been visible to viewers, is notable for being more roughly worked than the front. This difference has provided modern scholars with information on the methods used by Ancient Greek sculptors, and contributed to the debate regarding whether the later Hermes of Olympia is an original ... ab rundgang q 03 06 title Olympia, Zeustempel, Westgiebel, Apollon publisher Virtuelles Antikenmuseum ...   more details

  1. George Barret, Jr.

George Barret, Jr. 1767, London 1842, Paddington was an England English landscape painting painter , and a son of the Irish people Irish artist George Barret, Sr. Almost certainly taught by his father, he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1800 1803. He was an early member of the Royal Watercolour Society Society of Painters in Water Colours when it was founded in 1804, and exhibited prolifically, never missing an exhibition for 38 years. Little is known of his early years, except that in 1767 he was born in Orchard Street in London, off Portman Square, where his father lived after moving from his native Ireland. George Barret was seventeen when he and his brothers and sisters were left fatherless, and had to support themselves by their own efforts. Three of them, beside himself, took to the practice of art, but George was by far the most gifted artistically. His earlier works were views of the Thames Valley and Home Counties and a few of Wales, but he increasingly turned to romantic compositions of a Claudian type showing poetic sunrises and sunsets without reference to locality. A truly visionary painter, his artistic power remained unimpaired to the last, even though his life was one long struggle against financial ruin. He lived most of his life in Paddington, where he died on 19 March 1842. He was buried in the ancient churchyard of St. Mary s, Paddington. References J.L. 1. Richard Barret (divine)

Richard Barret , D.D. d. 1599 , was an English Catholic Anglicanism Anglican divines divine . Biography Barret was born in Warwickshire , and entered the English college at Douay 28 January 1576. He moved in 1582 to the English college at Rome , where he took his doctor s degree. In the same year, on the invitation of William Allen cardinal William Allen , he went to Rheims , and was appointed to the important post of superintendent of the studies of the college which had been removed to that city from Douay. Allen, on being created a cardinal, continued for a time to govern the seminary, but during his absence in Rome dissensions arose, and it became necessary for him to appoint a resident superior. Accordingly, by an instrument dated Rome, 31 October 1588, after mentioning that various complaints had been made to him of scandals which had arisen among its members, and defects against the college discipline , he nominated Dr. Barret to be president of the college. This appointment, which is said to have been due to the influence of the Society of Jesus Jesuits , was by no means a fortunate one, as the new president was far more fit to fill a subordinate post than that of superior. Nicholas Fitzherbert , who knew him personally, says that he was an excellent man, of great learning and piety, who had lived some years at Rome, and for a long time at Rheims under Allen s government, but he was naturally a little too severe and hot tempered. This impetuosity, till then latent, showed ... to Spain but the greater part of them migrated to Douay. On 23 June 1593 Dr. Barret left Rheims for Douay ... Worthington Douai Dr. Thomas Worthington . Infobox person name John, D.d. Barret image alt caption birth date birth place death date 1563 death place nationality English other names known for occupation John, D.D. Barret died 1563 , was an English Carmelite friar and after the reformation a protestant clergyman. Biography Barret was descended from a good family seated at King s Lynn in Norfolk, where he was born. After having assumed the habit of a Carmelite, or white friar, in his native town, he studied in the University of Cambridge , where he proceeded in 1533 to the degree of D.D., which Archbishop Cranmer had previously refused to confer upon him. In 1542 he was appointed reader in theology at the chapter house of Norwich, with an annual salary of 4l. sfn Cooper 1885 p 275 After the Dissolution of the Monasteries , he obtained a dispensation to hold a living. Accordingly, in 1541 he was instituted to the rectory of Hetherset in Norfolk, which he resigned the next year. In 1550 he was instituted to the rectory of Cantley in the same county, and to that of St. Michael at Plea, Norwich. The last mentioned benefice he resigned in 1560. He obtained the living of Bishop s Thorpe in 1558, and in the same year was installed a prebendary of Norwich. Bale asserts that in Mary I of England Queen Mary s reign Barret complied with the change of religion, and became a zealous papist but, however this may be, he found no difficulty in professing protestantism under Elizabeth I of England Queen Elizabeth . He died at Norwich on 12 July 1563, and was buried in the cathedral. sfn Cooper 1885 p 275 Works His works are sfn Cooper 1885 p 275 Reformationes Joannis Triss Ad Robertum Watsonum in carcere epistola , printed in the tiologia ... wstitle Barret, John d.1563 volume 3 pages 278 Endnotes manuscript Addit. 5863, f. 160 Blomefield ...
