  1. Apollonius the Sophist

Apollonius , also called the Sophist , was a famous Philologist grammarian , who probably lived towards the end of the 1st century AD and taught in Rome in the time of Tiberius . He was born in Alexandria , the son of another grammarian, Archibius . He was the author of a Homer ic lexicon , the only work of this kind existent today. His chief authorities were Aristarchus of Samothrace and Apion s Homeric glossary although some sources cite Apion as a disciple of Apollonius . The surviving text of this lexicon is an epitome , that is, it is a shortened summary of the original. In the original version, Apollonius apparently supplied at least one quotation in each entry. ref name Naoumides1962 cite journal author Naoumides M title Notes on literary papyri journal Trans Proc Am Philol Assoc volume 93 pages 240 52 year 1962 doi 10.2307 283764 jstor 283764 publisher The Johns Hopkins University Press ref It was edited for the first time by Villoison 1773, 2 vol. in quarto from a manuscript of Saint Germain, and also by I. 1. Lycophron (sophist)

Lycophron was a sophist of Ancient Greece . He is known for his statement reproduced by Aristotle , in the latter s Politics Aristotle Politics , 1280b10 , that law is only a convention, a surety to another of justice . This means that he treats law as a mere means, in the context of a perhaps primitive social contract theory, without considering it as something special, in contradistinction to, e.g., Plato but similar to both Thrasymachus and Callicles , albeit that their theories have as far as can be ascertained from the information available about them more specific characteristics. 1. Apollonius' theorem

Image Apollonius theorem.svg thumb right 350px Area of Green Area of Purple Area of Red In geometry , Apollonius theorem is a theorem relating the length of a Median geometry median of a triangle to the lengths of its side. Specifically, in any triangle ABC , if AD is a median, then math AB 2 AC 2 2 AD 2 BD 2 , math It is a special case of Stewart s theorem . For an isosceles triangle the theorem reduces to the Pythagorean theorem . From the fact that diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other, the theorem is equivalent to the parallelogram law . The theorem is named for Apollonius of Perga . Proof image ApolloniusTheoremProof.svg left thumb Proof of Apollonius theorem The theorem can be proved as a special case of Stewart s theorem, or can be proved using vectors see parallelogram law . The following is an independent proof using the law of cosines. ref Following Godfrey & Siddons ref Let the triangle have sides a , b , c with a median d drawn to side a . Let m be the length of the segments of a formed by the median, so m is half of a . Let the angles formed between a and d be and where includes b and includes c . Then is the supplement of and cos cos . The law of cosines for and states math begin align b 2 & m 2 d 2 2dm cos theta c 2 & m 2 d 2 2dm cos theta & m 2 d 2 2dm cos theta. , end align math Add these equations to obtain math b 2 c 2 2m 2 2d 2 , math as required. 1. Apollonius of Tyre

For the Stoic philosopher of the same name Apollonius of Tyre philosopher Apollonius of Tyre is the subject of an ancient short novella, popular during medieval times. Existing in numerous forms in many languages, the text is thought to be translated from an ancient Greek manuscript, now lost. Plot summary In most versions, the eponymous hero is hunted and persecuted after he reveals a king s incestuous relationship with his daughter. After many travels and adventures, in which Apollonius loses both his wife and his daughter and thinks them both dead, he is eventually reunited with his family through unlikely circumstances or intercession by gods. Some English versions have a recognition plot where Apollonius is shipwrecked and becomes a tutor to a princess who falls in love with him, and the good king gradually discovers his daughter s wishes. The major themes are the punishment of inappropriate lust&mdash the incestuous king invariably comes to a bad end&mdash and the ultimate rewards of love and fidelity. Origins Latin and Greek?
