Eastern Christianity This article is in Commonwealth English The Apology of Aristides was written by the early Christian writer Aristides Apologist Aristides fl. 2nd century . Until 1878, our knowledge of Aristides was confined to some references in works by Eusebius of Caesarea and Saint Jerome . Eusebius said that he was an Athenian philosopher and that Aristides and another apologist, Quadratus apologist Quadratus , delivered their Apologies directly to the Emperor Hadrian . Aristides is also credited with a sermon on Gospel of Luke Luke 23 43. Aristides remained a philosopher after his conversion to Christianity, and he continued to work as a philosopher in Athens. Discovery of the Apology In 1878, the Armenian monks of the Mechitarite convent in Venice published the first two chapters, which they had found in a manuscript in their collection in Armenian translation. This they accompanied with a Latin translation. Opinion as to the authenticity of the fragment was disputed, with Ernest Renan particularly vocal in opposition. Later, in 1889, J. Rendel Harris found the whole of it in a Syriac version at the Eastern Orthodox monastery of Saint Catherine s Monastery, Mount Sinai . Gaius Stertinius Xenophon approx. 10 BC 54 AD , often referred to in ancient literature as simply Xenophon , was a physician who served the Roman Emperor , Claudius , the fourth member of the Julio Claudian dynasty . The First Apology was an early work of Christian apologetics addressed by Justin Martyr to the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius . It is dated to the period 150 155. Purpose for writing The purpose of the Apology is to prove to the emperors, renowned as upright and philosophical men, the importance of Christianity. Chapters i. xii. give the preliminary negative proof chap. xiii. begins a positive exposition of Christianity that Christians are the true worshipers of God, the Creator of all things they offer him the only sacrifices worthy of him, those of prayer and thanksgiving, and are taught by his Son, to whom they assign a place next in honor to him this teaching leads them to perfect morality, as shown in their teacher s words and their own lives, and founded on their belief in the resurrection. File Justin Martyr.jpg thumb Justin Martyr The Second Apology of Justin Martyr is supposed to have been written as a supplement to the First Apology of Justin Martyr , on account of certain proceedings which had in the mean time taken place in Rome before Lollius Urbicus as prefect of the city, which must have been between 150 and 157. The Apology is addressed to the Roman Senate. Purpose of the Writing The Second Apology was meant to expose the real reasons behind the recent persecutions of Christians under Urbicus. It also tried to expose the utter irrationality of allegations and propaganda spread against the Christians. Persecution of Christians under Urbicus Justin recounts the story of a certain woman who on hearing the teachings of Jesus and having become a Christian refused to comply with the immoral practices of her husband. Because the disagreements were severe she desired to be divorced, but not being encouraged to do so, she continued in that relationship until one day when it became ethically unlivable, and she gave him a bill of divorce. The husband retaliated by bringing accusations against her before the Emperor. But when he couldn t do anything against her, he turned against the Christian leaders whom Urbicus the prefect began to severely persecute. Demonic Control of the World According to Justin, it is the demons who incite such hatred and evil against the people of God the ones who know the Son of God and have responded by faith to the Word of God. These demons are the spirits of those offsprings born through union of spirits and women before the Flood and who were destroyed by the Flood. The Form of Apology and Satisfaction of 1604 was a document drawn up by a House of Commons committee protesting against James I of England King James I s handling of recent political issues. For a variety of reasons James I of England King James I had upset many in the British House of Commons House of Commons in his first Parliament. These included issues over the Court of Chancery s decision to deny Sir Francis Goodwin s place in the Commons, the imprisonment of Sir Thomas Shirley and the Bishop of Bristol s book favouring the King s ideas on a union between England and Scotland. The document claimed that James, a foreign king, was ignorant of the Commons privileges and liberties and that, the document purported, were their right and due inheritance, no less than our very lands and goods. A Commons List of Committees of the United Kingdom Parliament committee of more than seventy members was appointed on June 1, on Sir Thomas Ridgeway s suggestion, to take a survey of all the Acts and proceedings of the House, which have been excepted unto, or whereof any misinformation hath been given unto his Majesty, from the beginning of the session... Approximately a fortnight later the committee had drawn up the document to be presented to his Majesty and on June 20 Ridgeway presented the draft to the Commons. Francis Bacon , who was a member of the committee, spoke against it. The document met opposition in the Commons, including committee members, and many doubted whether it was wise to present it to the King due to its tone and its claims. Parliament was prorogued on July 7 and the document was not debated again. The clerk requested to transcribe proceedings into the Commons Journal and copied the document for half a page and left several sheets blank without completing it.
