merge fear appeals date October 2011 An appeal to fear also called argumentum ad metum or ad metum? yes metum is the correct form in latin or argumentum in terrorem is a fallacy in which a person attempts to create support for an idea by using deception and propaganda in attempts to increase fear and prejudice toward a competitor. The appeal to fear is common in marketing and politics . ref http changingminds.org disciplines argument fallacies fallacies alpha.htm Fallacies alphabetic list full list ref Logic This fallacy has the following argument form Either P or Q is true. Q is frightening. Therefore, P is true. The argument is invalid. The appeal to emotion is used in exploiting existing fears to create support for the speaker s proposal, namely P. Also, often the false dilemma fallacy is involved, suggesting Q is the proposed idea s sole alternative. Example If you continue to drink, you will die early as your father did. If you cannot graduate from high school, you will live in poverty for the rest of your life. Voting for him is the same as voting for the terrorists. Refimprove date November 2007 Appeal to consequences , also known as argumentum ad consequentiam Latin for argument to the consequences , is an argument that concludes a premise typically a belief to be either true or false based on whether the premise leads to desirable or undesirable consequences. This is based on an appeal to emotion and is a form of logical fallacy , since the desirability of a consequence does not address the truth value of the premise. Moreover, in categorizing consequences as either desirable or undesirable, such arguments inherently contain subjective perspective cognitive points of view . In logic , appeal to consequences refers only to arguments which assert a premise s truth value true or false based on the consequences appeal to consequences does not refer to arguments that address a premise s desirability good or bad , or right or wrong instead of its truth value. Therefore, an argument based on appeal to consequences is valid in ethics , and in fact such arguments are the cornerstones of many moral theories, particularly related to consequentialism . General form An argument based on appeal to consequences generally has one of two argument form forms ref http www.fallacyfiles.org adconseq.html FallacyFiles.org Appeal to Consequences ref Positive form If P, then Q will occur. Accessed September 2011. ref or reductio ad ridiculum Latin reduction to the ridiculous , is a logical fallacy which presents the opponent s argument in a way that appears ridiculous, often to the extent of creating a straw man of the actual argument, rather than addressing the argument itself. For example If Einstein s Introduction to special relativity theory of relativity is right, that would mean that when I drive my car it gets Length contraction shorter and more massive the faster it goes. That s crazy This is, in fact, experimentally verifiable, but the effects are so minuscule that a human observer will not notice them at speeds far less than the speed of light. Theory of evolution Evolution is ridiculous If evolution were true, why are there still apes ? Extinction of all apes is not implied by the theory of evolution, thus the argument is invalid. A real man never puts vegetables on his pizza, and doesn t eat quiche . It implies that Macho masculine men don t eat their vegetables. This is a rhetorical tactic that mocks an opponent s argument, attempting to inspire an emotional reaction making it a type of appeal to emotion in the audience and to highlight the counter intuitive aspects of that argument, making it appear foolish and contrary to common sense . This is typically done by demonstrating the argument s logic in an extremely absurd way or by presenting the argument in an overly simplified way, and often involves an appeal to consequences . Appeal to ridicule is often found in the form of challenging one s credentials or maturity Nobody believes in socialism after college Grow up. The argument is ridiculed on the basis that having a view commonly associated with youth is somehow invalid. Although they appear ... more details
unreferenced date November 2007 The appeal to novelty also called argumentum ad novitatem is a fallacy in which someone prematurely claims that an idea or proposal is correct or superior, exclusively because it is new and modern. In a controversy between status quo and new inventions, an appeal to novelty argument isn t in itself a valid argument. The fallacy may take two forms overestimating the new and modern, prematurely and without investigation assuming it to be best case, or underestimating status quo , prematurely and without investigation assuming it to be worst case. Investigation may prove these claims to be true, but it is a fallacy to prematurely conclude this only from the general claim that all novelty is good . The opposite of an appeal to novelty is an appeal to tradition , in which one argues that the old ways are always superior to new ideas. Appeals to novelty are often successful in a modern world where everyone is eager to be on the cutting edge of technology. The so called Dot com bust of the early 2000s could easily be interpreted as a sign of the dangers of na vely embracing new ideas without first viewing them with a critical eye. Also, Advertising advertisers frequently extoll the newness of their products as a reason to buy. Conversely, this is satirised as bleeding edge technology by skeptics this may itself be an example of the appeal to tradition fallacy . The appeal to novelty is based on the reasoning that in general people will tend to try to improve the outputs resulting from their efforts. Thus, for example, a company producing a product might be assumed to know about existing flaws and to be seeking to correct them in a future revision. This line ... elected. Orphan date February 2009 POV date May 2008 An appeal to advantage is a rhetoric al device in which the speaker encourages his or her audience to perform some action by representing that action as being in the audience s best interest. An appeal to advantage can also be a request from someone in a position of power to someone who is in a socially subordinate position the request is specifically for the subordinate to perform an act contrary to the subordinate s wishes, such that the subordinate is forced to commit the act in order to satisfy a more significant need. The appeal is specifically most expedient or advantageous to the person in power, but is also presented as forwarding the subordinate s interests in some significant way. unreferenced date April 2009 The Appeal Group was a small group of Marxist Leninist s who broke away from the Communist Party of Great Britain CPGB in 1971 on the basis that the CPGB had abandoned revolutionary Marxism Leninism and that, after many attempts, it was impossible to change it from within except by breaking the rules. The group lasted for about five or six years. Problems with the CPGB The roots of the Appeal Group went back to the early 1950s, when the Bexley branch of the CPGB, led by Eddie Jackson, challenged the introduction of the British Road to Socialism and Rule 2 b in the party s rule book. The British Road replaced the former party programme, For a Soviet Britain , and was a programme for achieving socialism in Britain through the election of a socialism socialist government to Parliament without a revolution. Rule 2 b set this aim as a rule and outlawed any promotion of other perspectives by party members. Some older CPGB members who opposed these Marxist revisionism revisionist changes found themselves in a minority and isolated. The party s strict democratic centralism forbade them to communicate their concerns about the direction the party was taking except through the district and central congresses. For other uses Mass Appeal disambiguation Mass Appeal is a two character play by Bill C. Davis. The comedy drama focuses on the conflict between a complacent Roman Catholic pastor and the idealistic young deacon who is assigned to his affluent, suburban parish . Plot Father Tim Farley is highly popular with his parishioners due to his charm, wit, easy going manner, and entertaining but unchallenging sermons . One Sunday, seminary seminarian Mark Dolson interrupts Farley s sermon to challenge his stance on the ordination of women. The pastor is outraged and intrigued by the young man, and asks to have him assigned to work with him. Dolson is a firebrand eager to change the Church. He enjoys attacking Farley s song and dance theology and questioning why he drinks so much. Dolson feels it s his job to shake parishioners out of their complacency. Farley likes Dolson, but sees that he ll never succeed as a priest if all he does is irritate people and make enemies. Each man has something to teach the other about how to perform his priestly duties. Productions Mass Appeal was first performed in many small theatres, including The No Smoking Playhouse in Manhattan, produced by Pearl Tisman Minsky and Ken Berman . Ken Berman played the role of Tim Farley with Bill Davis playing the role of Mark Dolson. refimprove date June 2010 tocright Appeal to tradition also known as proof from tradition , ref refCathEncyc Catholic Encyclopedia . ref appeal to common practice , argumentum ad antiquitatem is a common fallacy in which a thesis is deemed correct on the basis that it correlates with some past or present tradition. The appeal takes the form of this is right because we ve always done it this way. ref refTrufant1917 Trufant 1917 . ref An appeal to tradition essentially makes two assumptions that are not necessarily true The old way of thought thinking was proven correct when introduced, i.e. since the old way of thinking was prevalent, it was necessarily correct. In actuality this may be false &mdash the tradition might be entirely based on incorrect grounds. The past justifications for the tradition are still valid at present. In actuality, the circumstances may have changed this assumption may also therefore be untrue. The opposite of an appeal to tradition is an appeal to novelty , claiming something is good because it is new . Examples The Sun has risen from East for as long as man has existed, hence it will also rise from East tomorrow. Rebuttal This statement postulates that things will remain the same ad infinitum. If the statement works tomorrow, it should work for the day after tomorrow etc. since there haven t been any changes in the situation. However there are many known ways in which the status quo could be broken in the future, such as the inevitable end of the life span of the Sun. Gay marriage is a bad idea because gay marriage has no historical precedent. Rebuttal To reject the fallacy as inherently fallacious, one would argue that even a lack of precedents would not, by itself, justify keeping the policy, as innovations, such as lending libraries and professional police and firefighting forces, have turned out to have been valuable changes in policy.
