  1. Special appearance

Unreferenced date December 2009 Civil procedure United States A special appearance is a term used in the United States American law of civil procedure to describe a civil defendants defendant s appearance in the court of another U.S. State state solely to dispute the in personum jurisdiction personal jurisdiction of the court over that defendant. Prior to the advent of this procedure, defendants had to either appear in the other state s court to defend the case on the merits, or not show up in court at all, and then mount a collateral attack on any Judgment law judgment rendered against them, when the plaintiff came to the defendant s state to collect on the judgment. In a legal catch 22 , if the defendant appeared solely to contest jurisdiction, the court would then be permitted to assert jurisdiction based on the defendant s presence. In response to the apparent inequity presented by this situation, most states have passed statutes permitting the defendant to make a special appearance in the courts of the state to contest jurisdiction, without further subjecting themselves to the jurisdiction of the court. The equivalent of such an appearance is possible in U.S. federal courts , for the defendant may make a motion to dismiss for lack of personal jurisdiction. Where a special appearance is permitted, the term general appearance is used to denote the normal type of appearance in court. A special appearance is in contrast to a general appearance . 1. Active appearance model

An active appearance model AAM is a computer vision algorithm for matching a statistical model of object shape and appearance to a new image. They are built during a training phase. A set of images, together with coordinates of landmarks that appear in all of the images, is provided to the training supervisor. The approach is widely used for matching and tracking faces and for medical imaging medical image interpretation . The algorithm uses the difference between the current estimate of appearance and the target image to drive an Optimization mathematics optimization process. By taking advantage of the least squares techniques, it can match to new images very swiftly. It is related to the active shape model ASM . One disadvantage of ASM is that it only uses shape constraints together with some information about the image structure near the Landmark point landmarks , and does not take advantage of all the available information the texture across the target object. This can be modelled using an AAM. 1. Appearance Event Ordination

Appearance Event Ordination or AEO is a scientific method for biochronology through the ordering of the appearance of fossil mammal genera by multivariate analysis , using conjunctional overlapping and disconjunctional nonoverlapping range distributions in large sets of data. ref J. Alroy. Appearance event ordination a new biochronologic method. Paleobiology 20 191 207 1994 . ref Process AEO is based on faunal overlap and stratigraphic superposition to derive a best fit sequence of first and last appearance events. Step 1 The first step is to translate patterns of overlap and law of superposition superposition into pairwise first before last statements. The wolf species Canis edwardii and Canis armbrusteri are used as example taxa for the following patterns. Each statement means that Canis edwardii , for example, must have first appeared before Canis armbusteri last appeared. This is true whenever either 1 Canis edwardii and Canis armbrusteri have been found together in at least one non time averaged fossil collection, or 2 Canis edwardii is found lower in at least one lithostratigraphy lithostratigraphic section than Canis armbrusteri . Step 2 A multivariate ordination algorithm is applied to derive a first pass hypothesized sequence of first and last appearances. The minimal constraint on this sequence is that if there is an observed, real world Canis edwardii before Canis armbrusteri statement for any pair of taxa, the hypothesized event sequence must replicate it. Then the program shuffles the events using a maximum likelihood criterion. The criterion basically seeks to pull apart as many hypothesized age range overlaps as possible, especially if they involve common taxa. orphan date November 2008 In New York City , a desk appearance ticket DAT is an order to appear in county court for an arraignment . When a DAT is issued, you are considered to be under arrest from an administrative standpoint. You report to arraignment on the date shown on the DAT from that point forward, your case is like any other legal case. The only difference is that you avoid actual arrest, booking, and incarceration before your arraignment. Obviously, DATs are only issued for crimes in which there is little chance that the defendant will flee the jurisdiction and the crime is not severe currently, DATs may be issued for infraction violation , misdemeanors , and E felonies . If you do not return to court on the date indicated on the DAT, the prosecution can request and a judge can issue a bench warrant for your arrest. From a legal standpoint, the authority for a DAT is found in New York s C.P.L 150.10, which describes a DAT as a written notice issued and subscribed by a police officer... directing a designated person to appear in a designated local criminal court at a designated future time in connection with his alleged commission of a designated offense. 1. Gloss (material appearance)

Gloss is an optical property descrbing the ability of a surface to reflect light into the specular direction. The factors that affect gloss are the refractive index of the material, the angle of incident light and the surface topography . Gloss is one of the factors that descrbe the visual appearance of an object. Materials with smooth surfaces appear glossy. Very rough surfaces such as chalk reflect no specular light and appear dull. Gloss is also expressed as Lustre mineralogy lustre in mineralogy , or Gloss paint sheen in certain fields of application. The appearance of gloss depends on a number of parameters which include the illumination angle, surface condition and observer characteristics. Primarily light is reflected from a surface in one of two ways. In specular reflection , the angle of the light reflected from the surface is equal and opposite to the angle of the incident light. A diffuse reflection scatters the incident light over a range of directionss. File gloss2.jpg thumb right Specular and diffuse reflection Variations in surface texture influence specular reflectance levels. Objects with a fine surface texture, i.e. highly polished and smooth, allow a high percentage of light to be reflected from their surfaces making them appear shiny to the eye. This is due to a greater amount of incident light striking the surface being reflected directly back to the observer the majority of which being reflected in the specular direction. Conversely objects with rough surfaces cause the light to be deflected at different angles according to the surface profile resulting in a scattering of light away from the angle of reflection. This causes the object to appear dull or matte . The image forming qualities are much lower making any reflection appear blurred. The higher the degree of surface roughness, the greater the scattering of light resulting in a lower gloss level. Equally the type of substrate material has an important effect on the amount of specular refle ...   more details
