AppiusClaudius Crassus PW 123 was a decemviri decemvir of the Roman Republic ca 451 BC . His father was AppiusClaudius Sabinus, Consul in 471 BCE Despite being of Patrician ancient Rome patrician descent, he supported the plebeian wish for a code of laws, and while in office shared power with their representatives. Thus a decemviri council of ten was established to ratify new laws, a process where the decemvirs had total authority over Rome, even suspending the current powers of the tribunes and other administrative officers. Although Appius served on full year term to ratify Rome s new laws off the Greek model, his council convinced the public to have them serve another annual term as decemvirs in order to ratify two more engraved tables to the laws which would become the Twelve Tables of Rome . When it came time to re appoint a new council of ten lawmakers, the Patrician ancient Rome patrician s became suspicious that Appius growing popularity would gain for him enough favor to be re appointed. Appius Junius Silanus , whom Cassius Dio erroneously calls Gaius Appius Silanus , was Roman consul consul in AD 28, with Publius Silius Nerva . He was accused of majestas in AD 32, but was saved by Celsus, one of the informers. Shortly after the accession of Claudius , in AD 41, when Silanus was governor of Hispania Tarraconensis , he was recalled to Rome and married to Domitia Lepida , mother of the empress Valeria Messalina Messalina . He was treated with the greatest of distinction, but having refused the advances of Messalina herself, he was soon put to death by the emperor. Messalina and Narcissus accused him of plotting to assassinate Claudius, and claimed that they had seen Silanus attempting to murder the emperor in their dreams. Among his ancestors there was evidently AppiusClaudius Tarronius Dexter his grandfather was the praetorian prefect Virius Nicomachus Flavianus , his father might be identified with his relative Clementianus , while he was probably a nephew of Nicomachus Flavianus son Nicomachus Flavianus . Continuing the tradition of his family he claims to follow the example set by Clementianus , he edited a manuscript containing the first ten books of Livy Ab Urbe condita , initially corrected by some Victorinus, then bought by Quintus Aurelius Symmachus , and finally emended by Nichomachus before arriving into the hands of Dexter all of the manuscripts of the first ten books of Livy s Ab Urbe condita that were subsequently copied through the Middle Ages into modern times are derived by this single manuscript, thanks to whom those books have survived.
