  1. Apple File Exchange

Apple File Exchange AFE is a utility program for Apple Macintosh computers. It was included on the Apple Tidbits or Install 2 disk in system versions System 7 7.0 through System 7.1 7.1 . In System 7.5 released in 1994 , it was replaced by PC Exchange . Apple File Exchange could read floppy disk s from DOS Microsoft Windows Windows and ProDOS Apple II systems, as well as disks from Macintosh Macs . This utility enabled Macs to read PC disks, but only if they were inserted after launching Apple File Exchange. If Apple File Exchange was not launched while inserting PC formatted floppy, the Mac would complain that the disk inserted was not a Macintosh disk and requested initialisation. Apple File Exchange was a file content translator, in contrast to the File System Translator of Apple GS OS which just translated the file system between different computers storage formats. AFE could convert data files produced by one program for use in another, e.g. between AppleWorks and ClarisWorks . ref http support.apple.com kb TA28032 Apple File Exchange Contrasted to File System Translators , Apple support archive article, last modified 2008 ref Bugs A floppy disk high density diskette in DOS format formatted as a 720K disk would not function correctly the Mac assumed that any high density disk has been formatted as an HD disk. To solve this problem, a user could cover the square hole with a piece of tape opposite the write protect tab, and re insert the disk. This square hole identifies the disk as a high density disk. Covering the square hole will make it appear to disk drive as a DD disk. 1. Atari Program Exchange

Atari Program Exchange APX was a division of Atari Atari, Inc. that distributed software for the Atari 8 bit family of home computers through a quarterly mail order catalog. APX, the brain child of Dale Yocam, started in February 1981 and guided by Fred Thorlin. APX published quarterly catalogs until 1984, when Atari CEO James J. Morgan closed down the mail order division. Details When Atari first launched the 8 bit systems in late 1979, they kept most of the hardware details secret. They intended to be the primary supplier of software for the platform, as had been the case with the Atari 2600 console. By the end of the first year on the market, however, many of these details had leaked out and increasingly sophisticated applications were becoming available. However, there were a limited number of distribution channels at the time. Dale Yocam approached Atari with the idea of setting up their own 3rd party publishing arm. With Atari s distribution capabilities the products would be seen by many more prospective customers, and at the same time, Atari would make money with every sale, money that would otherwise be lost. As Chris Crawford game designer Chris Crawford later put it blockquote The guy who cooked up the idea, Dale Yocam, was trying to explain to the management that there are a lot people out there that like to write programs and if we can publish these programs for them, it s a win win. 1. Library Awareness Program

In the 1980s the FBI began a program called the Library Awareness Program . This program was designed as a counterintelligence effort that would provide information to the FBI including the names and reading habits of users of many different libraries. The FBI was particularly interested in learning this type of information about foreign diplomats or their agents. It is clear that librarians and the public were unaware of this program until its existence was made public in an article published September 18, 1987 in the New York Times . The FBI claimed that one of the major reasons this program was initiated was because hostile intelligence agents had been able to find some information that could be dangerous to the security of the United States . The area of greatest concern was the information at academic libraries that could be accessed through sophisticated databanks used for research. 1. Newton-Beijing Jingshan School Exchange Program

Primary sources date December 2008 Notability date December 2008 The Newton Beijing Jingshan School Exchange Program is the oldest student exchange of public secondary school students between the United States and the People s Republic of China . The city of Newton, Massachusetts , hosts students and teachers from the Jingshan School in Beijing for four months each fall and sends students and teachers from Newton North High School and Newton South to Beijing each spring. History Beginning in 1985, though relations began in 1979, through 1989, groups of two to three teachers and four to five students spent a semester living, studying, and working in one another s school community in alternate years. Intensive language and cultural study preceded each visit. The American students in Beijing at the beginning of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 were sent home early, though it is unlikely they would have still been in Beijing by June 4, 1989. After a five year hiatus, the exchange program was resurrected, and began the schedule it is currently on Chinese students going to the U.S. for four months in the Fall, and American students going to China for four months in the Spring. Each school pays the respective travel expenses, while host families provide room and board . Through multiple programs and grants, about 80 teachers and administrators have been able to visit the Jingshan School outside the exchange program as well. The Newton Beijing Jingshan Program has been a model for exchange programs across the country. The program is currently chaired by former exchange teacher Donna Fong. Orphan date February 2009 The Inside Out Prison Exchange Program Inside Out is a national program based in Philadelphia at Temple University . ref http www.insideoutcenter.org Inside Out Prison Exchange Program Homepage Bot generated title ref Inside Out was established by Lori Pompa in 1997 to bring college students and incarcerated men and women together to explore and learn about issues of crime and justice from behind prison walls. The program was founded on the simple hypothesis that incarcerated men and women and college students might mutually benefit from studying together as peers. The program provides individuals on both sides of the prison walls the unique opportunity to engage in a collaborative, dialogic examination of issues of social significance through the particular lens that is the prism of prison. Through college classes and community exchanges, the program seeks to deepen the conversation about and transform our approaches to understanding crime, justice, freedom, inequality, and other issues of social concern. Inside Out creates a paradigm shift for participants, encouraging transformation and change in individuals and, in so doing, serves as an engine for social change.
