Integrated software is software for personal computer s that combines the most commonly used functions of many productivity software programs into one application. The integrated software genre has been largely overshadowed by fully functional office suite s, most notably Microsoft Office , but at one time was considered the killer application type responsible for the rise and dominance of the IBM PC in the desktop business computing world. ref cite web url http www.crn.com crn special supplement 816 816p71 hof.jhtml title Lotus 1 2 3 accessdate 2007 12 21 author Lee Pender date November 1998 work Ten Revolutionaries of Computing publisher Computer Reseller News ref In the early days of the PC before GUI s became common, user interfaces were text only and were operated mostly by function key and modifier key sequences. Every program used a different set of keystrokes, making it difficult for a user to master more than one or two programs. Programs were loaded from floppy disk , making it very slow and inconvenient to switch between programs and difficult or impossible to exchange data between them to transfer the results from a spreadsheet to a word processor document for example . In response to these limitations, vendors created multifunction integrated packages, eliminating the need to switch between programs and presenting the user with a more consistent interface. The potential for greater ease of use made integrated software attractive to home markets as well as business, and packages such as the original AppleWorks AppleWorks AppleWorks for the Apple II and Jane software Jane for the Commodore 128 were developed in the 1980s to run on most popular home computer s of the day. Commodore even produced the Plus 4 computer with a simple integrated suite built into ROM . Context MBA was an early example of the genre, and featured spreadsheet , database , chart making, word processing and terminal emulation functions. The Apple 80 Column Text Card was an expansion card for the Apple IIe computer to give it the option of displaying 80 columns of text instead of the usual 40 columns. Two models were available the cheaper 80 column card had just enough extra random access memory RAM to double the video memory capacity, and the Extended 80 Column Text Card had an additional 64 kilobyte s of RAM, bringing the computer s total RAM to 128kB. These cards went in the IIe s Auxiliary Slot , which existed in addition to the 7 standard Apple II peripheral cards Apple II peripheral slots present on all expandable Apple II series machines. Although in a separate slot, the card was closely associated with slot 3 of the 7 standard slots, using some of the hardware and firmware functions that would have otherwise been allocated to slot 3, because third party 80 column cards had traditionally been placed in slot 3 on the earlier Apple II and Apple II Plus machines. The extended version of the card features a jumper block J1 that when installed enabled the double high resolution capability. Since early Revision A Apple IIe motherboards were incapable of supporting the bank switching needed for the enhanced graphics mode, the block needed to be removed to disable the feature. As with many Apple II products, Clone computer science clone cards were also produced that performed a similar function, and some types of 80 column cards were even available for the older Apple II and Apple II Plus , which did not feature a dedicated slot for this card. Soon after the release of the Apple IIe, 80 column text support became a basic requirement of many software packages. Later, 128kB and therefore the Extended card became a minimum requirement for major programs. All versions of the extremely popular AppleWorks , in particular, required 80 column support Fact date February 2007 , and the last Apple II versions of AppleWorks required 128kB of memory. Apple File Exchange AFE is a utility program for Apple Macintosh computers. It was included on the Apple Tidbits or Install 2 disk in system versions System 7 7.0 through System 7.1 7.1 . In System 7.5 released in 1994 , it was replaced by PC Exchange . Apple File Exchange could read floppy disk s from DOS Microsoft Windows Windows and ProDOS Apple II systems, as well as disks from Macintosh Macs . This utility enabled Macs to read PC disks, but only if they were inserted after launching Apple File Exchange. If Apple File Exchange was not launched while inserting PC formatted floppy, the Mac would complain that the disk inserted was not a Macintosh disk and requested initialisation. Apple File Exchange was a file content translator, in contrast to the File System Translator of Apple GS OS which just translated the file system between different computers storage formats. AFE could convert data files produced by one program for use in another, e.g. between AppleWorks and ClarisWorks . ref http support.apple.com kb TA28032 Apple File Exchange Contrasted to File System Translators , Apple support archive article, last modified 2008 ref Bugs A floppy disk high density diskette in DOS format formatted as a 720K disk would not function correctly the Mac assumed that any high density disk has been formatted as an HD disk. To solve this problem, a user could cover the square hole with a piece of tape opposite the write protect tab, and re insert the disk. This square hole identifies the disk as a high density disk. Covering the square hole will make it appear to disk drive as a DD disk. Image Gobelogo.png right Gobe Software, Inc was a software company that published an integrated desktop software suite for BeOS . In later years, it was the publisher of BeOS itself. Gobe was founded in 1997 by members of the ClarisWorks development team and some of the authors of the original Styleware application for the Apple II . After leaving StyleWare and creating the product later known as ClarisWorks and AppleWorks , Bob Hearn , Scott Holdaway joined Tom Hoke , Scott Lindsey, Bruce Q. Hammond , and Carl Grice who also worked at Apple Computer s Claris division and formed Gobe Software, Inc with the notion to create a next generation integrated office suite similar to ClarisWorks, but for the BeOS platform. Gobe Productive v1.0 for BeOS was released in August 1998 and v2.0 in August 1999. The resulting product, Gobe Productive , was by far the most polished of the word processors, spreadsheet and vector graphics applications for BeOS, but as an integrated package a la ClarisWorks and Microsoft Works . When Be Inc. outsourced publication of BeOS in 2000 Gobe became the publisher of BeOS in North America, Australia, and sections of Asia. Only weeks after signing up other publishers around the globe, Be, Inc halted development for the BeOS platform and publicly announced that all of its corporate focus would be on Internet Appliances and made public announcements that hampered forward momentum of the BeOS platform. In addition, the publishers in general and Gobe in particular did not have source code access to the BeOS and were not able to continue its development or add drivers that the platform needed to be a viable alternative to Microsoft Windows Windows or Linux . Gobe also published Hicom Entertainment Next Generation Entertainment s Corum III role playing game for BeOS during this period. The failure of Be, Inc and BeOS meant ports had to be undertaken, and Windows and Linux variants were developed. Although the company shipped a Windows version of its so ... more details
