The society owns locomotives and rolling stock but not the railway it runs on. The name comes from the Appleby Frodingham Steel Company , now simply known as Scunthorpe Works. The railway operates entirely within the Corus Group Corus steelworks over the tracks normally used for moving iron, steel and materials around the works.     Kirkby Thore railway station was a train station railway station situated on the Eden Valley Railway between Penrith railway station Penrith and Kirkby Stephen East railway station Kirkby Stephen East . It served the village of Kirkby Thore . The station opened to passenger traffic on 9 June 1862, and closed on 7 December 1953. The track has been dismantled and the A66 road now uses the route of the railway at this point. The former A66 route past the station is now a Truck haulage yard. Although the village is also close to the Settle Carlisle Railway , and there is an active private Rail siding siding and goods yard, there has never been a passenger station on that line at this point. It is operated by Northern Rail who provide all passenger train services. The station was built by the Midland Railway and opened in 1876. It closed when local stopping trains over the Settle Carlisle Line were withdrawn in May 1970, but was reopened in July 1986. The Carlisle bound down station building has been converted into the Brief Encounter Tea Rooms and an antique shop. An enclosed bus shelter style waiting room has been provided at the Carlisle end of the platform. Services Six trains in each direction call at Langwathby on weekdays and three trains in each direction on Sundays. The station is also served two DalesRail trains from Preston & Blackpool North to Carlisle and return on Sundays during the summer months.
