Appleton Oaksmith February 12, 1825 October 29, 1887 , of Carteret County, North Carolina , was the son of Seba Smith and Elizabeth Oakes Smith . Appleton Oaksmith was one of the most colorful characters of mainland Carteret County. Before the Civil War, Appleton ventured into the shipping business, eventually purchasing several ships of his own. He had also, however, involved himself in the filibustering campaigns of William Walker filibuster General Walker in Nicaragua , actually accepting the office of secretary in Walker s new government and helping arrange for the supply of Walker s small military force. When Walker s bid for U.S. recognition failed and his militia was ousted from the country, there is mounting evidence that Appleton began to employ his ships in support of the Confederate States of America Confederate states , at least in gun running if not by allowing his ships to be used in the transport of slaves. In December 1861, Appleton was captured on Fire Island, New York and indicted for equipping a slave ship. With Lincoln s suspension of habeas corpus in effect, he was quickly jailed, and was convicted in June 1862 of slave trading. It is home to the St. Lawrence University Skating Saints ice hockey team. It was named for Judge Charles W. Appleton, class of 1897, the main benefactor of the arena as well as the riding center, which is named for his wife Elsa. Appleton Arena opened in January 1951. The Canton Community assisted with the construction of an adjacent outdoor rink previous to 1951. Appleton Arena was remodeled in the late 1970s and early 1980s to its current configuration. In 1999, the facade of the arena was renovated to allow for improved locker rooms particularly for the growing women s program and a larger lobby. Additionally, the playing surface was expanded to 85 feet by 200 feet, and a weight training facility was added. These renovations were specifically designed to improve the arena while only minimally changing the traditional wooden bleachers and general ambiance of the interior. The group is named after a character from the Tom Terrific cartoon. History Though nearly everyone in the group was from an Los Angeles , California based band called Stonehenge, the group s line up was revamped with the introduction of Michael Fennelly musician Michael Fennelly . Fennelly was the final addition to the group and became the frontman group s leader songwriter writing all their material, and becoming the sole guitarist and singer vocalist . Fennelly had been one of the principal vocalists and songwriters in The Millennium . In addition to Fennelly, the group s members included Felix Flaco Falcon percussion , Casey Foutz keyboards , Hank Harvey bass , and Phil Jones drums . Jones previously of Oskaloosa, Iowa , but more recently of Laurel Canyon, helped form the band after meeting Fennelly at Thee Experience, a club on the Sunset Strip .
