The Applied Physics Laboratory Ice Station 2007 APLIS07 is an U.S.A. and Japanese laboratory dedicated to the study of global climate change , located about 300km south of the Arctic Circle , Alaska on the West Ridge of the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. Background and purpose Citing the home site blockquote The International Arctic Research Center IARC at the University of Alaska Fairbanks UAF was established in 1999 as a cooperative research institute supported by both the U.S. and Japanese governments. Funding comes from the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. and from the Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. IARC serves as a focal point of excellence for international collaboration and provides the Arctic research community with an unprecedented opportunity to share knowledge about science in the Arctic, with an emphasis on global change research. The primary mission of the IARC is to nurture, integrate and synthesize research being conducted internationally by individuals and groups in order to identify natural and man made changes. More than 20 international groups and more than 60 scientists are collaborating with IARC, allowing the institute to meet the UAF mission and goals in a concrete way. IARC is devoting specific effort to answering the following three questions 1 Is climate change due to natural or man made causes? 2 What parameters, processes and interactions are needed to understand and predict future climate change? and 3 What are the likely impacts of climate change? blockquote coord 64 51 32 N 147 50 8 E region US type landmark display title References reflist http www.iarc.uaf.edu International Arctic Research Center Official site. The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics LASP is a research organization at the University of Colorado at Boulder . LASP is a research institute with over 100 research scientists ranging in fields from solar influences, to Earth s and other planetary atmospherics processes, space weather, space plasma and dusty plasma physics. LASP has advanced technical capabilities specializing in designing, building, and operating spacecraft and spacecraft instruments. Founded after World War II, the first scientific instruments built at LASP were launched into space using captured German V 2 rockets. To this day LASP continues a suborbital rocket program through periodic calibration instrument flights from White Sands Missile Range. It was originally called the Upper Air Laboratory , but changed to its current name in 1965. LASP has historical ties to Ball Aerospace Corporation and the Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy CASA . LASP has two facilities offices on the main CU Boulder campus, and the Space Technology Building in the University s research park. LASP s new facilities allow it to handle almost every aspect of space mission s, itself. Hardware facilities allow for the construction of single instruments or entire spacecraft . A mission operations center allows for the control of spacecraft data collection, and a large research staff analyzes the data. It also serves as an available laboratory for users interested in applying the techniques of ion beam analysis. ref name LIBH Cite web title Laboratory for Ion Physics work publisher ETH Zurich, Department of Physics date September 2010 url http www.phys.ethz.ch phys institute lip format accessdate 2010 09 05 ref The is facility also develops new instrumentation for AMS and ion beam analyses IBA . Research includes the study of ions at low energies in order to develop new compact facilities for AMS and IBA. Accelerators are also employed to prove AMS and IBA applications, and for the detection of rare radionuclides. Detecting rare radionuclides is a method applied to radiocarbon dating , life sciences, geology, and climate research . Materials analysis is accomplished with IBA by employing Rutherford backscattering spectrometry RBS or Elastic recoil detection ERDA . ref name intro Cite web title The world of Ion Beam Physics work overview publisher ETH Zurich date September 2010 url http www.ams.ethz.ch format accessdate 2010 09 05 ref ETH Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics is located in Zurich, Switzerland. ref name intro References Reflist Category Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Category Geophysics Physics org stub ...   more details
