Quantitative ecology is the application of advanced mathematical and statistics statistical tools to any number of problems in the field of ecology . It is a small but growing subfield in ecology, reflecting the demand among practicing ecologists to interpret ever larger and more complex data sets using quantitative reasoning. Quantitative ecologists might apply some combination of deterministic or stochastic mathematical models to theoretical questions or they might use sophisticated methods in applied statistics for experimental design and hypothesis testing . Typical problems in quantitative ecology include estimating the dynamics and status of wild populations, modeling the impacts of anthropogenic or climatic change on ecological communities, and predicting the spread of invasive species or disease outbreaks. Quantitative ecology, which mainly focuses on statistical and computational methods for addressing applied problems, is distinct from theoretical ecology which tends to explore focus on understanding the dynamics of simple mechanistic models and their implications for a general set of biological systems using mathematical arguments. Recreation ecology is the scientific study of human nature Ecology ecological relationships in recreation contexts. Previous studies have focused primarily on the impacts of visitors recreationists and tourists on recreation resources. While studies of human trampling can be traced back to the late 1920s, a substantial body of recreation ecology literature did not accumulate until the 1970s when visitation to the outdoors soared, threatening the ecology of natural and semi natural areas. Research Resource elements examined include soil , vegetation , water , and more recently, wildlife and microbe s, with the majority of investigations conducted on trails and recreation sites. Use impact relationships, environmental resistance and resilience, management effectiveness, monitoring techniques, and carrying capacity are some of the major themes in recreation ecology. Study results have been applied to inform site and visitor management decisions and to provide scientific input to management planning frameworks such as Limits of Acceptable Change LAC Visitor Experience and Resource Protection VERP Ecotourism Recent growth of ecotourism has prompted a new batch of recreation ecology studies focusing on developing countries where ecotourism is aggressively promoted. There is an increasing concern that ecotourism is not inherently sustainable and, if unchecked, would generate Tourism carrying capacity substantial impacts to ecotourism destinations which are often fragile ecosystem s. about the ecological term Supertramp disambiguation In ecology , a supertramp species is any type of animal which follows the supertramp strategy of high dispersion among many different habitats, towards none of which it is particularly specialized. Supertramp species are typically the first to arrive in newly available habitats, such as volcanic island s and freshly deforestation deforested land they can have profoundly negative effects on more highly specialized flora and fauna, both directly through predation and indirectly through competition for resources. The name was coined by Jared Diamond in 1974, as an allusion to both the itinerant lifestyle of the tramp , and the then popular band Supertramp . Although Diamond originally applied the term only to birds, the term has since been applied to insects and reptiles as well, among others any species which can migrate can be a supertramp. Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Ecology is a broad biological science and can be divided into many sub disciplines using various criteria. Many of these fields overlap, complement and inform each other. Indeed, few of these disciplines exist in isolation. For example, the population ecology of an organism is a consequence of its behavioral ecology and intimately tied to its community ecology . Methods from molecular ecology might inform the study of the population, and all kinds of data are modeled and analyzed using quantitative ecology techniques. When discussing the study of a single species, a distinction is usually made between its biology and its ecology . For example, polar bear biology might include the study of the polar bear s physiology , morphology biology morphology , pathology and ontogeny , whereas polar bear ecology would include a study of its prey species, its population and metapopulation status, distribution, dependence on environmental conditions, etc. In that sense, there can be as many subdisciplines of ecology as there are species to study. Other criteria Ecology can also be classified on the basis of the primary kinds of organism under study, e.g. animal ecology , plant ecology , insect ecology the biomes principally studied, e.g. forest ecology , grassland ecology , desert ecology , benthic ecology , marine ecology , urban ecology the geographic or climatic area, e.g. arctic ecology , tropical ecology the spatial scale under consideration, e.g. macroecology , landscape ecology the philosophical approach, e.g. systems ecology which adopts a holistic approach the methods used, e.g. molecular ecology . Wikify date April 2011 Soundscape ecology has sometimes been considered interchangeable with acoustic ecology , but it has a different and distinctive meaning, according to a small group of researchers at Purdue University . The term has been used for decades in acoustic ecology, and comes from the founding work of Barry Truax and R. Murray Schafer . Soundscape ecology as a component of landscape ecology still falls under the broader interdisciplinary focus of acoustic ecology, and can perhaps be best seen as a logical and scientifically focused extension of soundscape studies, which was founded by Schafer. ref Pijanowski, B., Villanueva Rivera, L.
