From the 1950s, American linguistic tradition began to diverge from the Ferdinand de Saussure de Saussurian structuralism taught in European academia, notably with Noam Chomsky s Psychological nativism nativist transformational grammar and successor theories, which during the 1970s Linguistics Wars and the hey day of postmodernism gave rise to a bewildering variety of competing grammar framework s. American linguistisics outside the Chomskian tradition includes functional grammar with proponents including Talmy Giv n , and cognitive grammar advocated by Ronald Langacker and others. linguistic typology controversially mass lexical comparison by Joseph Greenberg . 1. Generative linguistics

Refimprove date June 2007 linguistics Generative linguistics is a school of thought within linguistics that makes use of the concept of a generative grammar . The term generative grammar is used in different ways by different people, and the term generative linguistics therefore has a range of different, though overlapping, meanings. Formally, a generative grammar is defined as one that is fully explicit. It is a finite set of rules that can be applied to generate all those and only those sentences often, but not necessarily, infinite in number that are grammatical in a given language. This is the definition that is offered by Noam Chomsky , who invented the term, ref cite book title Syntactic Structures page 13 author Chomsky, Noam year 1957,2002 publisher Mouton de Gruyter ref and by most dictionaries of linguistics. Generate is being used as a technical term with a particular sense. To say that a grammar generates a sentence means that the grammar assigns a structural description to the sentence. ref cite book title Aspects of the Theory of Syntax author Chomsky, Noam year 1965 publisher MIT Press ref The term generative grammar is also used to label the approach to linguistics taken by Chomsky and his followers. Chomsky s approach is characterised by the use of transformational grammar a theory that has changed greatly since it was first promulgated by Chomsky in his 1957 book Syntactic Structures and by the assertion of a strong linguistic Universal grammar nativism and therefore an assertion that some set of fundamental characteristics of all human languages must be the same . The term ge ne rative linguistics is often applied to the earliest version of Chomsky s transformational grammar, which was associated with a distinction between the deep structure and surface structure of sentences. copyedit date April 2012 Orphan date September 2011 Blocking in linguistics , or more specifically in morphology linguistics morphology , refers to the unacceptability of applying a morphological process on certain word due to the presence of a competing form. ref cite book editor Jack C. Richards et. al title Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics year 2005 publisher Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press location Beijing isbn 978 7 5600 4882 6 pages 71 ref There are several regular processes in word formation , such as the plural plural marker in English s or es e.g. dog and dogs or wish and wishes . This plural marker is not, however, acceptable on the word child as in childs , because it is blocked by the presence of a competing form children , which in this case is simply a historical retention of an older morphological process. There are several theoretical approaches to blocking effects. One promising approach includes the idea that Semantics semantic and syntactic features create slot or cells in which items can appear. Blocking happens when one cell is engaged by one form as opposed to another. But the blocking has been explained along two primary dimensions, the size of the blocking object, and the existence of ungrammatical forms. ref cite journal title Architecture and Blocking last1 Embick first1 David last2 Marantz first2 Alec date Winter 2008 journal Linguistic Inquiry volume 39 issue 1 pages 1 53 publisher The MIT Press issn 1530 9150 accessdate September 18, 2011 url http muse.jhu.edu login?uri journals linguistic inquiry v039 39.1embick.pdf ref References Reflist Category Linguistics stubs Category Linguistic morphology Ling stub ...   more details
