  1. Applied Physics Research Group

The Applied Physics Research Group APRG is a laboratory at the University of Florida , located in Gainesville, FL . The group is directed by Subrata Roy. A majority of the researchers in the lab are graduate students, though there are some post doc, undergraduate, and high school researchers. Current Research Research in the lab currently focuses around the underlying physic and application of plasma based devices for sterilization , flow control , space propulsion , and combustion . Work done in the lab consists of both experimental work and numerical simulations, which are performed using a variety of different finite element and finite difference codes. This research is supported by a number of industrial, governmental, and military organizations, of which APRG continues very close collaboration with. In the past few years, APRG has pioneered the usage of different dielectrics, geometries, and applications of Dielectric Barrier Discharge DBD actuators. APRG History APRG started off as the Computational Plasma Dynamics Laboratory at Kettering University , located in Flint, MI , in 2001. It moved to Gainesville, FL in 2006, with a slight name change, later adopting the name Applied Physics Research Group in 2010. While at Kettering, the size of the lab never grew to more than a handful of individuals, at the University of Florida, the lab grew very quickly to its present size. 1. Applied Physics Laboratory Ice Station

The Applied Physics Laboratory Ice Station 2007 APLIS07 is an U.S.A. and Japanese laboratory dedicated to the study of global climate change , located about 300km south of the Arctic Circle , Alaska on the West Ridge of the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. Background and purpose Citing the home site blockquote The International Arctic Research Center IARC at the University of Alaska Fairbanks UAF was established in 1999 as a cooperative research institute supported by both the U.S. and Japanese governments. Funding comes from the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. and from the Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. IARC serves as a focal point of excellence for international collaboration and provides the Arctic research community with an unprecedented opportunity to share knowledge about science in the Arctic, with an emphasis on global change research. The primary mission of the IARC is to nurture, integrate and synthesize research being conducted internationally by individuals and groups in order to identify natural and man made changes. More than 20 international groups and more than 60 scientists are collaborating with IARC, allowing the institute to meet the UAF mission and goals in a concrete way. IARC is devoting specific effort to answering the following three questions 1 Is climate change due to natural or man made causes? 2 What parameters, processes and interactions are needed to understand and predict future climate change? and 3 What are the likely impacts of climate change? blockquote coord 64 51 32 N 147 50 8 E region US type landmark display title References reflist http www.iarc.uaf.edu International Arctic Research Center Official site. 1. Multipurpose Applied Physics Lattice Experiment

dablink For other senses of maple , see Maple disambiguation . The Multipurpose Applied Physics Lattice Experiment MAPLE dedicated isotope production facility was a project jointly undertaken by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited AECL and MDS Inc. MDS Nordion . It was intended to include two identical reactors, as well as the isotope processing facilities necessary to produce a large portion of the world s medical isotopes, especially Molybdenum 99, medical Cobalt 60, Xenon 133, Iodine 131 and Iodine 125. An operational license for the MAPLE 1 reactor was granted in 1999, and the reactor went critical for the first time soon after. However, problems with the reactor, most notably a positive Nuclear chain reaction power co efficient of reactivity , led to the cancellation of the project in 2008. History Background With the completion of the NRX reactor in 1947, AECL s Chalk River Laboratories possessed the world s most powerful research reactor. While the large neutron fluxes available in the reactor led to advances in such fields as condensed matter physics and neutron spectroscopy, many experiments were carried out involving the production of new isotopes . The field of nuclear medicine developed when it was realized that some of these artificially created isotopes could be used to diagnose and treat many diseases, especially cancers. Pioneering medical work done in the late 40 s and early 50 s established Cobalt Cobalt 60 as a useful isotope, as the relatively high energy gamma rays produced when it undergoes beta decay are able to penetrate the skin of the patient, and deliver a greater portion of the dose directly to the tumor. The high neutron efficiency of the NRX s heavy water moderated design, coupled with the high neutron flux of the reactor, made it relatively inexpensive for AECL to produce medical grade Cobalt 60. For example, the cost of the entire unit used to perform the first Cobalt 60 treatment was about 50,000. By way of contrast, it would cost 50,000,000 ...   more details

  1. Applied probability

Much research involving probability is done under the auspices of applied probability , the application of probability theory to other scientific and engineering domains. However, while such research is motivated to some degree by applied problems, it is usually the mathematics mathematical aspects of the problems that are of most interest to researchers as is typical of applied mathematics in general . Applied probabilists are particularly concerned with the application of stochastic process es, and probability more generally, to the natural, applied and social sciences, including biology , physics including astronomy , chemistry , computer science and information technology , and economics . Another area of interest is in engineering , particularly in areas of uncertainty , or risks. It is provided to 130,000 members of twelve physics societies, including the American Physical Society . Over the last 60 years many famous physicists have written for the magazine, including Albert Einstein , Niels Bohr , and Richard Feynman . Although its content is scientifically rigorous and up to date, it is not a true scholarly journal in the sense of being a primary vehicle for communicating new results. Rather, it is more of a hybrid magazine that informs readers about important developments in the form of overview articles written by experts, shorter review articles written internally ... such as science politics. The physics community s main vessel for new results is the Physical Review suite of scientific journals published by the American Physical Society and Applied Physics Letters published by the American Institute of Physics . The magazine provides a historical resource of events associated to physics, including debunking the physics behind the so called Strategic Defense Initiative Star Wars program of the 1980s, and the state of physics in China and the Soviet Union during the 1950s and 1970s. 1. Solar physics

For the physics journal, see Solar Physics journal Solar physics is the study of our Sun . It is a branch of astrophysics that specializes in exploiting and explaining the detailed measurements that are possible only for our closest star. It intersects with many disciplines of pure physics , astrophysics , and computer science , including fluid dynamics , plasma physics including magnetohydrodynamics , seismology , particle physics , atomic physics , nuclear physics , stellar evolution , space physics , spectroscopy , radiative transfer , optics applied optics , signal processing , computer vision , and computational physics . Because the Sun is uniquely situated for close range observing other stars cannot be resolved with anything like the spatial or temporal resolution that the Sun can , there is a split between the related discipline of observational astrophysics of distant stars and observational solar physics. The Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society boasts about 600 members in 2008 , compared to several thousand in the parent organization. A major thrust of current 2009 effort in the field of solar physics is integrated understanding of the entire solar system including the Sun and its effects throughout interplanetary space within the heliosphere and on planet s and planetary atmosphere s. Studies of phenomena that affect multiple systems in the heliosphere, or that are considered to fit within a heliospheric context, are called heliophysics , a new ...
