  1. Appropriation (sociology)

Appropriation in sociology is, according to James J. Sosnoski, the cultural assimilation assimilation of concepts into a governing framework... the arrogation, confiscation, or seizure of concept s. According to Tracy B Strong it contains the Latin root proprius , which, carries the connotations not only of property , but also of proper, Economic stability stable , assured and indeed of common or ordinary. He elaborates I have appropriated something when I have made it mine, in a manner that I feel comfortable with, that is in a manner to which the challenges of others will carry little or no significance. A Writing text , we might then say, is appropriated when its reader does not find himself or herself called into question by it, but does find him or herself associated with it. A successfully appropriated text no longer troubles the appropriator that it has become a part of his or her understanding, and it is recognized by others as owned, not openly available for interpretation logic interpretation . According to Gloria Anzald a, the difference between appropriation and proliferation is that the first steals and harms the second helps heal breaches of knowledge. 1. Appropriation (economics)

Appropriation is a non violent process by which previously unowned natural resources , particularly land, become the property of a person or group of persons. The term is widely used in economics in this sense. In certain cases, it proceeds under very specifically defined forms, such as driving stakes or other such markers into the land claimed, which form gave rise to the term staking a claim. adverse possession Squatter s rights are another form of appropriation, but are usually asserted against land to which ownership rights of another party have been recognized. In legal regimes recognizing such acquisition of property, the ownership of duly appropriated holdings enjoys such protections as the law provides for ownership of property in general. Under some systems using this method of acquiring ownership of land, it is permitted to employ violence in defending the duly appropriated holding against encroachment against the ownership or usage claims, again usually according to specifically defined forms including warnings to the encroaching party, exhaustion or unavailability of duly constituted law enforcement resources, etc.. Libertarianism Libertarian and other property rights oriented ideologies define appropriation as requiring the mixing of the would be owner s labor with the land claimed ref Rothbard, Murray N. 1. Recuperation (politics)

Recuperation , in the sociological sense, is the process by which political radicalism politically radical ideas and images are commodified and incorporated within a mainstream society and, thus, become interpreted through a more socially acceptable or conventional perspective. More broadly, it may refer to the cultural appropriation appropriation of any subversive works or ideas by mainstream media or culture. It is the opposite of d tournement , in which images and other cultural artifacts are appropriated from mainstream sources and repurposed with radical intentions. The concept in political philosophy of recuperation was first proposed by members of the Situationist International .
