  1. John Emes

John Emes fl. 1785 1805 , was a British engraver and water colour painter. Emes is best known by his engraving of the picture by James Jefferys of The Destruction of the Spanish Batteries before Gibraltar. The etching for this is dated 1786, and as it was published in October 1789 by Emes and Elizabeth Woollett, widow of the celebrated engraver, it is possible that it may have been begun, or intended to have been begun, by Woollett himself. Emes was also a clever water colour painter, and executed pleasing tinted drawings of views in the Lake district and elsewhere, some of which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1790 and 1791. There are three water colour drawings by Emes in the Print Room at the British Museum , one being a large drawing representing The Meeting of the Royal Society of British Archers in Gwersylt Park, Denbighshire the figures in this are drawn by R. Smirke, R.A., and it was afterwards engraved in aquatint by C. Apostool . A set of sixteen views of the lakes in Cumberland and Westmoreland, drawn by J. Smith and J. Emes, were engraved in aquatint by S. Alken these were incorporated into West s Guide to the Lakes. Emes also engraved some views of Dorsetshire. His collection of prints was sold on 22 March 1810, he being then deceased. Paul Getty Museum , Los Angeles, California Jean Baptiste Le Prince September 17, 1734 September 30, 1781 was an important French etcher and painter. Le Prince first studied painting techniques in his native Metz . He then travelled to Paris around 1750 and became a leading student of the great painter, Fran ois Boucher 1703 1770 . Le Prince s early paintings in both theme and style are comparable to his master s rococo techniques. In 1758 Le Prince journeyed to Russia to work for Catherine the Great at the Winter Palace Imperial Palace , St. Petersburg . He remained in Russia for five years and also travelled extensively throughout Finland, Lithuania and even Siberia . When Le Prince returned to Paris in December, 1763, he brought with him an extensive collection of drawings which he employed as the basis for a number of fine paintings and etchings. J. B. Le Prince was elected a full member of the Acad mie de peinture et de sculpture in 1765. Le Prince s graphic art of Russia and its peoples is significant in that he based his compositions entirely upon his own designs, lending a much more realistic portrayal to his views than other eighteenth century contemporaries . He is also credited with being the first artist in 1768 to introduce aquatint into his etched and engraved plates. He may even have been the inventor of aquatint , the tonal graphic art that would later be so skillfully used by such masters as Goya , Louis Philibert Debucourt , Eug ne Delacroix Delacroix and Thomas Rowlandson . Four Bears lived in the first half of the 19th century on the upper Missouri River in what is now North Dakota . Four Bears was a favorite subject of artists, painted by George Catlin and Karl Bodmer . Among his people he was a brave warrior, famous for killing a Cheyenne chief in hand to hand combat. He became friends with artist Karl Bodmer in 1833, and became chief in the year 1836. Around that time, a smallpox epidemic wiped out most of his tribe, leaving 125 survivors out of a population of formerly 1,600. He died on July 30, 1837 after suffering from smallpox, brought to his tribe by whites. Before his own death he lost his wife and children to the disease and in his last speech to the Arikara and Mandan s two closely related tribes he denounced the white man he had previously treated as a brother for bringing the disease to his people. Four Bears lamented that in death his scarred face would be so ugly even the wolves would turn away from him. Smallpox wiped out more than 80 percent of the Mandan population in only a few months, and they were not the only tribe to suffer from the disease. Many believed that he died of smallpox, but George Catlin claimed that he starved himself to death out of grief from the death of his family.
