In 1997 FEMA released its first edition of a commercial off the shelf Catastrophe modeling loss and risk assessment software package built on GIS technology. This product was termed HAZUS97. The current version is Hazus MH V2.0 where MH stands for Multi Hazards . Currently Hazus can model four types of hazards flood ing, hurricane s, coastal surge, and earthquake s. The model estimates the risk in three steps. First it calculates the exposure for a selected area, second, it characterizes the level or intensity of the hazard affecting the exposed area, and third, it uses the exposed area and the hazard to calculate the potential losses in terms of economic losses, structural damage, etc. Although it was developed with the US continent in focus, the Hazus toolset has been adopted by emergency management organizations worldwide. As of November 2008, the only data sets available were for the continents of Africa and Central America . Statement of purpose From the website... The idea behind the Map Library is that the lack of good, simple maps is a serious obstacle to development in all kinds of fields, from health care to urban management, from de mining to environmental protection. The library s purpose is two fold to make public domain mapping data more readily available for developing countries, and to provide free, easy to use software to facilitate map making by non experts. The Map Library delivers data and software both on the internet and by post on CD for those with poor or no internet access. Data format and conversion The project data is managed in part by two pieces of software, each supporting different file formats and conversions. Raster Converter handles ECW file format ECW files these can be converted to BMP file format BMP , TIFF , and with external libraries, JPEG , and JPEG 2000 . Vector Converter handles MLB map library files these files can be converted to data files for ArcView , AutoCAD , and several other formats. In geology , especially in the study of glacial till , eigenvector s and eigenvalue s are used as a method by which a mass of information of a clast Fabric geology fabric s constituents orientation and dip can be summarized in a 3 D space by six numbers. In the field, a geologist may collect such data for hundreds or thousands of clast s in a soil sample , which can only be compared graphically such as in a Tri Plot Sneed and Folk diagram ref Graham, D., and Midgley, N., 2000. Infobox software name ArcMap logo screenshot caption author developer Esri latest release version 10 latest release date operating system Microsoft Windows Windows operating system desc genre GIS software license Proprietary software Proprietary website ArcMap is the main component of Esri s ArcGIS suite of geospatial processing programs, and is used primarily to view, edit, create, and analyze geospatial data. ArcMap allows the user to explore data within a data set, symbolize features accordingly, and create maps. Functionality ArcMap users can create and manipulate data sets to include a variety of information. For example, the maps produced in ArcMap generally include features such as north arrows, scale bars, titles, legends, etc. The software package includes a style set of these features. The ArcGIS suite is available at three license levels ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo. Each step up in the license provides the user with more extensions that allow a variety of querying to be performed on a data set. ArcInfo is the highest level of licensing, and allows the user to use such extensions as 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst, and the Geostatistical Analyst. Maps created and saved within ArcMap will create a file on the hard drive with an .mxd extension. Once an .mxd file is opened in ArcMap, the user can display a variety of information, as long as it exists within the data set. At this time the user will create an entirely new map output and use the customization and design features to create a unique product. Upon completion of the map, ArcMap has the ability to save, print, and export files to Portable Document Format PDF . The geographic information that is loaded into ArcMap can be viewed in two ways data view and layout view. In data view, the user can interact with the geographic information presented, and the map elements are hidden from view. Most projects begin in this view, and continue to the layout view for final editing and production. While in the layo ... more details
