  1. Arcachon Bay

Unreferenced date July 2007 File Bassin arcachon fin aout.jpg thumb Arcachon Bay Arcachon Bay in French language French , the Bassin d Arcachon , and known locally simply as le Bassin is a Headlands and bays bay of the Atlantic Ocean on the southwest coast of France , situated between the C te d Argent and the C te des Landes , in the region of Aquitaine . The bay covers an area of 150  km at high tide and 40  km at low tide. Some of its geological features are natural Environmental preservation preservation areas. The general shape of the Bassin d Arcachon is that of an equilateral triangle pointing north, the southwest corner of which is open to the sea, between Cap Ferret and the town of Arcachon more specifically, its suburb Pyla sur Mer , through a 3  km narrow channel Les Passes . On the north shore is the town of Ares disambiguation People & Places Ar s , then Andernos les Bains on the northeast. Just south of the entrance is The Great Dune of Pyla . Nearly in the middle of the bay is a very particular island L le aux Oiseaux Isle of the Birds . The Bassin still has a link to the sea perhaps because of the Eyre river that runs from the Landes forest and has its mouth Delta de l Eyre in its southeast corner. Otherwise the Bassin would have become blocked by the shoal sandbanks built up by the tides. In the past, similar areas became lakes called in French lacs or tangs and are nowadays filled with fresh water. On the French Atlantic coast, running north south ... and the tang de Garros. 1. Our Lady of Arcachon

Orphan date February 2009 Our Lady of Arcachon is a three dimensional religious image venerated at Arcachon in southwestern France and credited with working miracle s. To all appearances a work of the thirteenth century, it is carved from a block of alabaster about twenty inches in height and represents Mary mother of Jesus Mary, the mother of Jesus , clad in Oriental drapery and holding Jesus the Divine Infant on her right arm. Blessed Thomas Illyricus of Osimo born about the middle of the fifteenth century , a Franciscan Franciscan monk who had retired to the forest solitude of Arcachon, is said to have found this statue, much battered by the waves, on the seashore. He immediately constructed a wooden chapel which was replaced, a century later, by a spacious stone sanctuary. This, in turn, was so menaced by the drifting sands of the dunes as to necessitate the erection in 1723 of a new church on a neighbouring hill overlooking the Bay of Arcachon. The statue survived both French Revolution revolutions and was granted the honour of a coronation, by a brief of Pope Pius IX , on 15 July 1870. Devotion to Our Lady of Arcachon spread far and wide, and the shrine became a centre of pilgrimage . Before 1842 the church had been surrounded only by a few fishermen s huts, but with the erection of villas and the discovery of the salubrious climate of the area people began to flock to the spot, which is now the centre of a flourishing town.
