    Argonauts of the Western Pacific is a 1922 ethnological work by Bronis aw Malinowski . The book is about the Trobriand people who live on a small island chain called the Kiriwina Islands northeast of Papua New Guinea . The book is part of Malinowski s trilogy on the Trobrianders the other books include The Sexual Life of Savages in North Western Melanesia 1929 and Coral Gardens and their magic 1935 . Argonauts is arguably the most famous book in the history of anthropology, and its influence on generations of anthropologists has been profound. The posthumous publication of Malinowski s diaries in 1967 in which he revealed clearly his distaste for many aspects of field experience if anything deepened interest in Malinowski and Argonauts . Above all, the publication of Argonauts of the Western Pacific clearly distinguished the genre of ethnography from the growing documentation of foreign places that had been building since the mid eighteenth century. Malinowski s opening chapter on Subject, Method and Scope drew a line, so to speak, around the work done by anthropologists, on the one hand, and a motley array as he saw them of travelers, missionaries, and journalists, on the other. The aircraft caught fire during takeoff on March 22, 1984. The Boeing 737 taxied from the Calgary International Airport at 7 35 AM and proceeded to take off north on runway 34 16, carrying five crew members and 114 passengers. At 7 42 AM, a loud popping sound was heard 20 seconds into takeoff. The plane began to vibrate and pull to the left, and a fire broke out in the rear of the aircraft. The pilot, Stan Fleming, quickly aborted the take off. An emergency evacuation was ordered as the fire continued to roar. No one was killed. Five people were seriously injured and 22 suffered minor injuries. The plane was severely damaged by the fire. The fire was attributed to a faulty compressor disc which blew apart, piercing the fuel tanks. This was similar to the cause of the British Airtours Flight 28M disaster which claimed 55 lives in 1985 . First published by the Royal College of Science in 1888 in literature 1888 , it is the first well developed use of a machine constructed to travel through time a time machine in science fiction, as it predates Wells s more famous time traveling novel, The Time Machine , by 7 years. Plot summary This brief story begins with a third person narrative third person account of the arrival of a mysterious inventor to the peaceful Wales Welsh town of Llyddwdd. Dr. Moses Nebogipfel takes up residence in a house sorely neglected after the deaths of its former inhabitants. The main bulk of the story concerns the apprehension of the simple rural folk who eventually storm the inventor s devilish workshop in an effort to repay supposed witchery. Nebogipfel escapes with one other person&mdash the sympathetic Reverend Elijah Ulysses Cook&mdash in what is later revealed to be a time travel time machine . The next part picks up with an unnamed Author character discovering the dazed Reverend Cook returned from unbelievable exploits after having been missing for three weeks. The remainder of the story is the Reverend s short retelling again in the third person of the events that took place that night and the revelation that Nebogipfel is an anachronism Anachronic Man whose genius drives him to seek out a time more suited to his abilities. The title is sometimes loosely applied to all Harte s stories of early California . Description Nothing in the Tales of the Argonauts proper quite equals in merit The Luck of Roaring Camp , The Outcasts of Poker Flat and Tennessee s Partner, which had appeared in an earlier collection but An Iliad of Sandy Bar, How Santa Claus Came to Simpson s Bar, and some others have been deservedly popular. The Argonauts are of course the Gold Rush of 1849 gold seekers of 1849 and the years immediately following. These adventurers came from all quarters of the globe and all ranks of society, and they had in common only the possession of the strength and determination necessary to reach the new Colchis . Here they lived, at first, wholly free from the conventional restraints imposed by an organized society, and each man showed himself for what he was. Many of these primitive social conditions still existed when Harte went to California in 1854, and they made a great impression on the observant boy. He did not use them in literature, however, until he was able to look back on them in the light of experience. Criticism Californians objected that his pictures were unreal but they give the impression of essential truth to life an impression not spoiled by his persistent habit of showing the good elements in even the lowest and most debased characters. Harte occasionally seems to have adopted some of the less fortunate devices of Charles Dickens Dickens , but his manner was chiefly his own. He lacks literary finish, though he was painstaking in regard to style but in these early tales he has a sure command of humor and pathos, and a complete mastery of his unique material.
