Origins of the conflict After the great victory in the Battle of Trayanovi Vrata , and the subsequent civil war in the Byzantine Empire , Samuil was free to attack the Byzantine strongholds all over the Balkan peninsula . After having secured his rule over most of the northern Balkans, in 996 he led a campaign against Thessalonica, Byzantium s second largest city. The battle Samuil was a skillful military commander and organised a brilliant ambush. He ordered his soldiers to dig ditches, pitfalls and other traps outside the town and left most of his army there. Next, Samuil assaulted the fortress with a small, detached force. The Byzantine governor, dux Gregory Taronites, sent part of his forces under his son, Ashot, to drive them away. Samuil then staged a deceptive retreat, drawing the Byzantines into the trap he had prepared. Surrounded and cut off, the Byzantine detachment was devastated. When Gregory learned about his son s peril, he and his troops attempted to rescue him, but they were also defeated and the governor killed, while his son was captured. The rim of Prinz is the most intact in its northeastern half, while a large gap exists in the southern end of the crater wall. The rim climbs to a maximum height of 1.0 km above the base. It is attached along the eastern rim by a low ridge that is part of the foothills of the small Montes Harbinger range to the northeast. The region of the mare about Prinz is marked by Ray system rays from Aristarchus. Rimae Prinz Just to the north of Prinz is a system of rille s designated the Rimae Prinz. These are sinuous in nature and extend for up to 80 kilometers. The tiny crater Vera is only a couple of kilometers to the north of Prinz s rim, and serves as the origin of one of these rille s. Raman Raman is a small Moon lunar Impact crater crater that lies on the western edge of a plateau feature in the expansive lunar mare named Oceanus Procellarum . It shares this plateau with the lava flooded Herodotus crater Herodotus and Aristarchus crater Aristarchus to the southeastern. To the northeast of Raman is the small peak named Mons Herodotus . To the northwest on the mare is the long, narrow range named the Montes Agricola . This is an elongated crater formation, with a secondary feature bulging out along the southeast rim. The inner walls of this crater have a higher albedo than the surrounding terrain , which is indicative of a relatively youthful formation. This crater was previously designated Herodotus D, a satellite crater of Herodotus, before being named by the International Astronomical Union IAU .
