  1. Aristion

Aristion died 86 BC in Athens was a philosopher and tyrant of Athens from 88 BC to 86 BC. Aristion joined forces with Mithridates VI of Pontus Mithridates against the Romans under Lucius Cornelius Sulla in the First Mithridatic war , but to no avail. On March 1, 86 BC, Athens was conquered by Sulla and Aristion was executed. He is called Athenion by Posidonius , and he may be the same person, or he may be a second tyrant whose story became confused with the first. Life His early history is preserved by Athenaeus , ref Athenaeus, v. 211ff ref on the authority of Posidonius . Posidonius calls him Athenion and makes him a Peripatetic school Peripatetic philosopher, whereas others, Pausanias geographer Pausanias , Appian , and Plutarch , call him Aristion, and Appian calls him an Epicurean philosopher. There is no universally accepted resolution to this confusion, and it is possible that there were two separate tyrants who held power in Athens in quick succession during the First Mithridatic War whose stories became conflated together. Athenion or Aristion was the illegitimate son of a Peripatetic philosopher, also called Athenion, to whose party he succeeded, and so became an Athenian citizen. He married early, and began at the same time to teach philosophy, which he did with great success at Messene and Larissa , On returning to Athens with a considerable fortune, he was named ambassador ... and adds that it was by means of the money resulting from this robbery that Aristion was enabled to obtain ... was reported. Eventually Athens was stormed, and Sulla gave orders to spare neither age nor sex. Aristion ..., however, was soon taken, and Aristion dragged to execution from the altar of Athena and poisoned. 1. Apellicon of Teos

Apellicon lang el died c. 84 BCE , a wealthy native of Teos , afterwards an Athens Athenian citizen, was a famous book collecting book collector of the 1st century BCE. He not only spent large sums in the acquisition of his library , but stole original documents from the archives of Athens and other cities of Ancient Greece Greece . Being detected, he fled in order to escape punishment, but returned when Athenion or Aristion , a bitter opponent of the Ancient Rome Romans , had made himself tyrant of the city with the aid of Mithridates VI of Pontus Mithradates . Athenion sent him with some troops to Delos , to plunder the treasures of the temple, but he showed little military capacity. He was surprised by the Romans under the command of Orobius or Orbius , and only saved his life by flight. ref Athenaeus, v. ref He died a little later, probably in 84 BCE. Library Apellicon s chief pursuit was the collection of rare and important books. He purchased from the family of Neleus of Scepsis in the Troad manuscripts of the works of Aristotle and Theophrastus including their libraries , which had been given to Neleus by Theophrastus himself, whose pupil Neleus had been. They had been concealed in a cellar to prevent their falling into the hands of the book collecting princes of Pergamon , and were in a very dilapidated condition. Apellicon filled in the Lacuna manuscripts lacuna e, and brought out a new, but faulty, edition. In 84 Lucius Cornelius Sulla Sulla removed Apellicon s library to Rome . ref Strabo, xiii. Plutarch, Sulla , 26 ref Here the manuscripts were handed over to the grammarian Tyrannion of Amisus , who took copies of them, on the basis of which the Peripatetic school peripatetic philosopher Andronicus of Rhodes prepared an edition of Aristotle s works. Apellicon s library contained a remarkable old copy of the Iliad . He is said to have published a biography of Aristotle, in which the calumnies of other biographers were refuted. 1. Cambysopolis

Cambysopolis is the non classical name of a Roman Catholic titular bishopric in the former Roman province of Asia Minor . The name is owing to a mistake of some medieval geographer. Ancient and ecclesiastical history After his victory at Issus 333 B.C. Alexander the Great built, near the ancient town of Myriandros , a city called after him Alexandria Minor or Alexandria ad Issum , or, more frequently Alexandria Scabiosa , i.e. mountainous . It became a suffragan diocese of Anazarbus , the metropolis of the Roman province of Cilicia Secunda . Lequien II, 903 mentions a dozen bishops among them St. Helenus , martyr St. Aristion , martyr St. Theodore, martyr Paulus, a Monophysite christologic heretic from the Catholic and orthodox point of view E.W. Brooks, The Sixth Book of the Select Letters of Severus, II, 98 . In an Antiochene Notitia episcopatuum of the tenth century A.P. Kerameus, Maurocordatos Library Greek , Constantinople, 1884, p. 66 , instead of Alexandria Scabiosa , we read the strange form Alexandroukambousou , in one word. A little later, and surely in the twelfth century, this corrupt form was mistaken for two names and thus arose Alexandrou and Kambysou polis . Hence came two episcopal titles connected with one city, and the name Cambysopolis passed into all the Greek and Latin Notitiae episcopatuum . The Roman Curia preserved only the title Cambysopolis the correct Ancient name, Alexandria Scabiosa, exists no more. Modern history The city, situated on the bay of the same name, was later called Alexandretta , and by the Turks Iskanderoun when it was in the vilayet of Aleppo , and was united to that Syrian latter city by a carriage road. In the early 20th century it had about 7000 inhabitants 3000 Greeks, 500 Catholics of Latin and Eastern Rites . The Catholic parish was conducted by Carmelites , and there are attached to it Sisters of St. Joseph. On 10 August 1920 the whole Sandjak district within the vilayet of Alexandretta became part of French Syria ...   more details
