  1. Juan Banderas

    Juan Banderas executed 1833 at Arizpe was the leader of the Yaqui during part of the Yaqui Wars , specifically from 1825 until 1833. Banderas came to the leadership of the Yaqui when they opened war against Occidente State due to opposition to threats of taxation and ending of their soverinty. Banderas was able to convince the Mayo people Mayos , Opatas and Pimas to join in the war against the Mexicans. In 1827 Banderas forces suffered defeat due to using primarily bows and arrows against the Mexicans guns. Banderas then negotiated a peace in which he was pardoned and made the captain general of the Yaqui towns. In 1829 Occidente instituted a new plan to tax the Yaqui and also to allot their lands. They also ended the office of captain general. Banderas decided to hold wait until he had better weapons to act. By 1832 he had enough guns and gunpowder to feel confident of some success in war with the Mexicans. His force of 1,000 including Opatas under the command of Delores Guittierez was defeated near Buenavista, Senora Buenavista in 1833. He was then captured and executed. Sources Spicer, Edward H. In 1649, Captain Sim n Lazo de la Vega founded a Spanish town in the same spot. The name means water snake in the indigenous language. Most of the land is mountainous and is part of the Sierra de Sonora. There are still pine forests and a rich variety of fauna, including coyotes, jaguars, deer, raccoons, wild pigs, skunks, and owls, among others.   1. Juan Bautista de Anza I

    Born on June 29, 1693 in the Basque village of Hernani , Gipuzkoa, Basque Country historical territory Basque Country , Juan Bautista de Anza he spelled it Anssa , his son of the same name spelled it Anza was the eldest son and second child of Antonio de Anza, the town pharmacist, and Lucia de Sassoeta. At the age of nineteen, in 1712, he migrated to New Spain , going first to Culiac n , Sinaloa where his mother had relatives already established. Anza did not stay there long, however, and was soon involved in silver mining in lamos, Sonora . From there he became involved in the discovery and exploitation of two important silver mining camps, or boomtowns, between 1716 and 1720 at Aguaje southeast of present day Hermosillo , Sonora and Tetuachi south of Arizpe . He bought other mining properties at Basochuca, Sonora, north of Arizpe and, at least, by early 1721 he was a lieutenant in the Sonora militia. Shortly after that, on August 2, 1721, he joined the regular cavalry as an alf rez, or second lieutenant, at the Janos Presidio under Captain Antonio Bezerra Nieto. As a soldier he was described as being of sound body, white and bearded with faded auburn hair. Soon after beginning his military career at Janos he married the Captain s daughter and quickly rose to the rank of first lieutenant. In November of 1726, he was promoted to captain and assigned to take the place of Captain Gregorio lvares Tu n y Quir s at Fronteras, who had been at odds with the citizens of Sonora for years and had just been removed from office and ordered to Mexico City to stand trial for fraud and misuse of the king s resources. Anza quickly set about whipping the Caballer a de las Fronteras Cavalry of the Frontier into shape and providing protection to the communities of Sonora from the Apaches . He assigned soldiers to the San Luis and upper Santa Cruz River Valleys in the Pimer a Alta, and settlers began to move into the area.
