The San Diego RepertoryTheatre was developed out of Indian Magique, a street theater group of actors writers directors producers who were fellow theatre graduates from USIU . Founded initially in 1975 by Sam Woodhouse, Christopher R, John Lee and others, they met in the loft of the old Spreckels Building in San Diego, California . The troupe initially performed their original Hot Dogs On Parade for high school assemblies in the greater San Diego area, mentored the respective high school theatre students and performed on the week end at their theatre. In 1976, Sam Woodhouse and Douglas Jacobs, established the Rep in its first home, the Sixth Avenue Playhouse where the company put on 19 San Diego premieres and 12 West Coast premieres of such plays as American Buffalo play American Buffalo , Curse of the Starving Class , and K2 . The company s world premieres included Gold , a project developed by the company which included Whoopi Goldberg . In 1986, the San Diego Repertory Teatre moved to the new Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza , where the company assumed the duty of Resident Manager of the Lyceum complex, which provides services to other arts and community organizations. History The Creede RepertoryTheatre CRT was founded in 1966 when 12 students from the University of Kansas came to Creede, Colorado , responding to a letter drafted by the Creede Junior Chamber of Commerce and Pastor Jim Livingston. The letter was a call for help. With the mining business declining in Creede, the town needed a new source of viable income to help sustain the smaller businesses and its year round residents. Steve Grossman, a theatre student at KU, was the only one who responded to the letter. He took 11 students with him and together they launched the first of many summer theatre seasons in Creede. The first season began with the opening of Mr. Roberts and continued with the showing of The Bat , Our Town , The Rainmaker , and Born Yesterday .
