The Campus ArkansasStateUniversityParagould s campus is housed in a former Wal Mart retail store near Paragould s regional airport. Only a small percentage of the building is currently used, but as the enrollment grows, more of the building may be converted to classrooms. The campus is one of the fastest growing college campuses in the state. It fell to Earth at approximately 4 08 a.m. on February 17, 1930. The fireball could be seen as far away as Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, and of course, Arkansas. Fact date January 2009 Initially, observers thought it was an airplane crashing. The meteorite split into many pieces. The largest piece was discovered by W. H. Hodges in an 8 foot 2 m hole on his farm a few miles southwest of Finch, Arkansas Finch , Arkansas , near Paragould, ArkansasParagould . It was then purchased by Harvey H. Nininger , who later sold it to Chicago, Illinois Chicago s Field Museum of Natural History . It has been on loan to the University of Arkansas since 1988, initially to the University Museum and then after November 2003 to the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences . History SAU Tech was created on April 5, 1967, as Southwest Technical Institute by Act 534 of the Arkansas Legislature. The purpose of the institute was to provide a technically trained workforce for the growing Highland Industrial Park where it was located. Seventy acres of land and six buildings at the Park were donated by the Brown Foundation of Houston, Texas which had purchased the former Schumacher Naval Ammunition Depot for redevelopment. Financing for renovation and equipping the facility was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
