The ArmyGeneral Staff Plot was a failed 1948 attempt to overthrow the Thai government of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram . The plotters were members of the ArmyGeneral Staff, among whom were Lieutenant General Chit Mansin Sinatyotharak, Pridi s former supreme commander, and Major General Net Khemayothin, a close associate of Phibun during the war and later a prominent Free Thai Movement Seri Thai member. They objected to the army s increasingly corrupt and inefficient leadership, and hoped to reorganise and professionalise the military. Their plan called for the arrest of Phibun, top government officials, and leading army officers during a birthday party for Sarit Thanarat scheduled on October 1, 1948. Although the plotters enjoyed widespread support within the General Staff, the 1947 Coup Group Thailand Coup Group which had re installed Phibun received advance notice of their plans. On September 21 General Phin Choonhavan Phin Chunhawan recommended that the Ministry of Defence and other ministries carry out a purge of government officials. His suggestion was approved by the cabinet, and on October 1 the arrests of the coup plotters began. Plot In the early 1960s, nearly 20 years since the Second World War ended, an Italian general, accompanied by a priest who is also an Italian army colonel, is sent to Albania to locate and collect the bones of his countrymen who had died during the war and return them for burial in Italy. As they organise digs and disinterment, they wonder at the scale of their task. The general talks to the priest about the futility of war and the meaninglessness of the enterprise. As they go deeper into the Albanian countryside they find they are being followed by another general who is looking for the bodies of German soldiers killed in World War II. Like his Italian counterpart, the German struggles with a thankless job looking for remains to take back home for burial, and questions the value of such gestures of national pride. It is noted that Kadare was encouraged to write the book from Drago Siliqi , literary criticist and director of the state owned publishing house Naim Frash ri . ref name Jorgaqi cite web last Jorgaqi first Nasho url http lajme.shqiperia.com lajme artikull iden 1046913629 ... s 100 Books of the Century Ismail Kadare DEFAULTSORT General of the Dead Army, The Category 1963 ... Image American ww2 army base hospital.jpg thumb right 350px What remains of the 118th General Hospital The 118th General Hospital was a United States Army U.S. Army military hospital built in 1942 at Riverwood, New South Wales Herne Bay , New South Wales . This was the largest military hospital in Australia , during World War II . Known as the 118 General Hospital it was planned as a hospital centre of five hospitals consisting of 490 timber barracks type buildings, which could house a total of 4,250 beds and accommodate up to 1,250 patients and 3,500 staff. The hospital was formed by doctors and nurses from the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore , Maryland . The hospital staff arrived in Sydney during June 1942 and ran a 400 bed hospital from August 1942, with a section at the Hydro Majestic Hotel at Medlow Bath . Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt , wife of the US President Franklin D. Roosevelt , visited the 118 General Hospital on 8 September 1943. The US Army vacated the hospital in 1945 and the Royal Navy occupied many of the buildings in January 1945 and the Australian Army used the remainder of the other buildings. After World War II the site passed to the New South Wales Housing Commission from March 1946 and the huts were used to ease the post war housing shortage. ref http www.canterbury.nsw.gov.au www html 871 history of riverwood .asp History of Riverwood ref ref cite book last Lawrence first Joan. coauthors Brian Madden and Lesliie Muir. title http www.kingsclearbooks.com.au cb.html Pictorial History of Canterbury Bankstown. publisher Kingsclear Books year 1999 month September. isbn 0 908272 55 3 page 94 . ref References Reflist See also List of former United States Army medical units Barracks Batteries Bunkers and Forts in Sydney DEFAULTSORT 118th General Hospital Us Army Category Military history of Sydney during World War II CAtegory Medical units and formations of the United States Army ... more details
