  1. Sloedam

coord 51 30 N 3 42 E The Sloedam is an old dam, connecting the Dutch islands Zuid Beveland and Walcheren near the town of Arnemuiden . Before this dam was constructed, these islands were separated by a stretch of water called the Sloe . The Sloedam was constructed in 1871 during the laying of the railway between the towns of Vlissingen and Roosendaal , the Zeeuwse Lijn . After World War II , the areas to the south were polder poldered . Ever since the Veerse Gatdam and the Oosterscheldedam were created, the dam does not function as a primary defense against the sea. World War II During World War II, many battles were fought on and around the Sloedam. In 1940, the area was contested during the German invasion of the Low Countries in May 1940 in the Battle of Zeeland . A combined French Dutch force attempted to stop the German invasion, but was unsuccessful in this attempt. In the period of 1944 and 1945, heavy fighting once again came to the area when the Allies attempted to clear the entrance to the harbor of Antwerpen . After heave fighting, Zeeuws Vlaanderen and Zuid Beveland were freed from German control by Canadian forces. However, the Walcheren island still contained a large German force that controlled access to the Western Scheldt . De Sloedam was the only access road to the former island of Walcheren. The Canadians reached the dam from Zuid Beveland . The Germans were well prepared, and had established multiple well prepared mortar sites that allowed them to fire on every point fo the dam. The Canadian attempts to reach Walcheren all failed. Two Dutch resistance fighters offered their assistance to the Canadians. They knew the sandbars of the Sloe that ran dry during low tide, and these resistance fighers led a patrol to Walcheren that managed to mark the dry area. After a short reconnaissance of the German positions, the patrol returned to Zuid Beveland. The next day a large Canadian unit managed to cross, once again aided by the resistance men. 1. Battle of Zierikzee

The battle of Zierikzee was a naval battle between a County of Flanders Flemish fleet and an allied France Franco County of Holland Hollandic fleet which took place on 10 and 11 August 1304. The battle, fought near the town of Zierikzee , ended in a Franco Holland victory. The battle is part of a larger conflict between the Count of Flanders and his French feudal lord, King Philip IV of France 1296 1305 . Franco Flemish War 1297 1305 Flemish invasion of Hainaut, Zeeland and France The County of Zeeland was an area that had been contested between the Count of Flanders and the Count of Holland since the 11th century. Originally granted in 1012 by Emperor Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor Henry II to the count of Flanders Baldwin IV, Count of Flanders Baldwin IV , by 1076 the area had become part of Holland but under Flemish overlordship. After the Flemish victory in the battle of the Golden Spurs , the Flemish attacked John II, Count of Holland John II Avesnes , count of Holland, Zeeland and of County of Hainaut Hainaut and conquered Lessines . The House of Dampierre and the House of Avesnes had been involved in a familial war for decades. In retaliation to the Flemish invasion of Hainaut John s son William I, Count of Hainaut William plundered Cadzand . In reaction on this raid, Guy of Namur , son of Guy, Count of Flanders Guy I of Flanders , formed a fleet at Sluis , which sailed on 23 April 1303 to claim Zeeland for the Flemish. After Flemish landings near Arnemuiden and Veere the troops of William fled to Middelburg which surrendered on 9 May 1303. After this the Flemings conquered the whole of Walcheren and several other islands. Only Zierikzee was held for the count of Holland. In July 1303 an armistice was arranged between the Flemings and the count of Holland. Covered by an armistice in the north, the Flemings raised an army near Cassel, Nord Cassel , which entered France and attacked Saint Omer , Th rouanne Terwaan and Tournai .
