    Portal Ancient Near East Arpad probably modern Tell Rifa at , Syria was an ancient Aramaean city located in north western Syria, north of Aleppo . In 743 BC, the Assyria n king Tiglath pileser III led a military expedition to Syria, defeating there the Urartu Uraratian army. But the city of Arpad, which had formed an alliance with Urartu, did not surrender easily. It took Tiglath pileser three years of siege to conquer Arpad, whereupon he massacred its inhabitants and destroyed the city. The city is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible several times 2 Books of Kings Kings 18. 34 19. 13 Book of Isaiah Isaiah 10. 9 36. 19 37. 13 Book of Jeremiah Jeremiah 49. 23 Archaeology Tell Rifa at is an oval 250 by 233 meters. Within this, the main citadel is 142 by 142 meters with a maximum height of 30 meters. The defensive wall surrounding the site is about two miles long. The site has been worked by a team from the Institute of Archaeology or the University of London . After a preliminary examination in 1956, Tell Rifa at was excavated for two seasons in 1961 and 1964. The team was led by M. V. Seton Williams. ref M. V.     Arpad Darazs Born 07 July 1922, died 16 December 1986 was a Hungary Hungarian United States American music education music educator who was widely known as one of the few in the Western hemisphere as an authority on the Zolt n Kod ly Kod ly method of choral instruction. Before he gained wide acclaim for his work at the University of South Carolina , he garnered acclaim with the success of the St. Killian s Boychoir of Farmingdale, New York . The boys choir not only sang on the Sonny Fox show, but also on a Christmas album with Andre Kostelanetz , as well as the with Leonard Bernstein at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the United Nations . Arpad Darazs graduated from Franz Liszt Conservatory in Budapest and was the conductor of the Hungarian State Ballet Chorus and Orchestra, as well as choirmaster for the Hungarian Radio Network. While at the University of South Carolina 1966 1986 he founded the USC Concert Choir. He also conducted the Columbia SC Boychoir, as well as the Columbia Barbershop Chorus, and the First Presbyterian Church Choir. Later he was also conductor of the Columbia Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1981 he founded the Palmetto Mastersingers, which is an all male chorus that went on to win critical acclaim at competitions in Hungary and Wales 1984 . In 1976, the Concert Choir became the first choir from the United States to win the first prize in the International B la Bart k Choral Competition in Hungary. They repeated this in 1980. In 1985 he was awarded the Elizabeth O Neill Verner Government Award for his contributions and achievements in and to the arts in South Carolina. He died on 16 December 1986 from leukemia at the age of 64.
