Arrack, originally a strong India n liquor, was imported from Java island Java and became the base ingredient for making punsch. Although they both refer to certain kinds of mixed beverages with liquor as a base ingredient, traditional Swedish Punsch is different from Punch drink punch . Both names probably come from the same source a Hindi language Hindi loanword for five , referring to the traditional number of ingredients. The Swedish Historical Museum of Wines and Spirits see below states that it is more probable that the word came to Swedish via English, than as a direct loan from Hindi. History of Punsch in Sweden The Swedish East India Company started to import arrack with the arrival of the ship Fredricus Rex Sueciae to Gothenburg in 1733. It quickly became popular, especially among the wealthy, who could afford the price of imported goods. Later it spread through all levels of society. A testament to the widespread popularity of punsch or rack arrack is the songs of Swedish eighteenth century poet and composer Carl Michael Bellman . It is often mentioned in his three works Bacchi Tempel 1783 , Fredmans Epistlar 1790 and Fredmans S nger 1791 about a group of fictional characters, drunkards, bohemians and prostitutes in contemporary Stockholm . See for example song no. 48 or epistle no. 41. Indian Made Foreign Liquor IMFL is western style hard liquor such as whisky , rum , vodka , etc., manufactured in India . It is differentiated from indigenous recipes such as fenny , Palm wine toddy , and Arrack drink arrack , which are collectively called country liquor in Hindi desi sharab . The term Indian Made Foreign Liquor is the official term used by government, business, and print media in India. Manufacture A common characteristic of many IMFLs, distinct from spirits elsewhere in the world, is that irrespective of the final product the starting ingredient is a neutral spirit distilled from molasses , a byproduct of the sugar industry. For example, whereas a whisky in most countries would be distilled from grain, Indian whisky Indian whiskies are made from distilled molasses spirit, blended with grain or malt based whisky, which may include imported Scotch whisky . ref cite web last Mallya first Vijay url http www.ft.com cms s 0 51378b84 362c 11e0 9b3b 00144feabdc0.html axzz1f3EfAn3X 20 publisher Financial Times accessdate 29 November 2011 title India King of good times ref ref cite news url http www.time.com time magazine article 0,9171,1630540,00.html ixzz1f3FS8MiP publisher Time accessdate 29 November 2011 title The Whisky Rebellion date 7 June 2007 ref The same applies to other IMFL spirits, like rum or vodka. An eau de vie plural, eaux de vie also spelled eau de vie and eaux de vie is a clear, colorless brandy Fruit brandy fruit brandy that is produced by means of fermentation and double distillation. The fruit flavor is typically very light. More precisely, eau de vie refers to a distilled beverage made from fruit other than grapes. Similar terms may be local translations or may specify the fruit used to produce it. Although eau de vie is a French term, similar beverages are produced in other countries e.g., Schnapps Schnaps in German speaking regions German Schnaps , Rakia Balkan rakia , Tuica Romanian tuica , Slivovitz Czech and Slovak slivovitz , Palinka Hungarian palinka , Arrack Coconut arrack Sri Lankan coconut arrack , and Chacha brandy Georgian chacha . Etymology Eau de vie is a French expression that means water of life . Other Distilled beverage spirits have similar etymologies, such as whisky , which is an anglicization of the Irish language Irish uisce beatha or of the Scottish Gaelic language Scottish Gaelic uisge beatha . Similarly, we see aqua vitae in Latin IPA en kw va ti and akvavit IPA en kv vi t in the Scandinavian languages. The Slavic terms w dka Polish language Polish and vodka Russian language Russian are diminutives of the words for water . Production A typical scenario would involve growing the appropriate fruit, harvesting it when ripe, fermenting the crushed fruit, and then distilling. Eaux de vie are typically not aged in wooden casks, hence they are clear. The ripe fruit is fermented, distilled, and quickly bottled in order to preserve the freshness and aroma of the parent fruit. Although this is the usual practice, some variants do exist, and some distillers age their products before bottling. ref cite news first Eric last Asimov authorlink coauthors title An Orchard ... more details
