A warrant canary is a method used by an Internet service provider to inform their customers that the provider has not been served with a secret government subpoena. Such subpoenas, including those covered under the USA Patriot Act , provide criminal penalties for revealing the warrant to a third party, such as the customers. A warrant canary may be posted by the provider to inform customers of dates that they haven t been served a secret subpoena. If the canary has not been updated in the time period specified by the host, customers are to assume that they have been served with such a subpoena. Theoretically, this allows the provider to inform customers of subpoenas without violating any laws. The legality of this has not been tested in any court, however, and the results of the Doe v. Ashcroft lawsuit as well as subsequent changes to the USA PATRIOT Act may obviate the tool for the time being. Warrant of Committal is a legal term used by the law systems of Canada and the United Kingdom , which allows a magistrate or judge to enforce a judgment or order against a person or corporation that has refused or neglected to comply with a known court judgment or order within a known fixed period of time. Eligibility and Enforcement The person or director of a corporation subject to the warrant of committal must have been served in a timely fashion with a copy of the order to do or abstain from doing the act in question. If the person served with the order fails to obey it, the judgment creditor may issue either a claim form or application notice seeking committal for contempt of court for the offender. The claim form or application notice must identify the breach of injunction which has taken place, and be supported by an affidavit served with it stating the grounds for the committal application. A warrant of committal may not be enforced more than two years after the date it was issued, without further order from the court. In New Zealand , a Warrant of Fitness WOF colloquially a warrant is a document certifying that a light motor vehicle has passed a compulsory periodic vehicle inspection inspection of safety and roadworthiness. Most vehicles with a gross vehicle mass gross mass of under convert 3500 kg which are used on public roads are required to undergo a WOF test annually until six years old, after which the vehicle must be tested six monthly. Vehicles over convert 3500 kg , passenger service vehicles taxicab taxis , bus es, shuttles, etc. , and rental car rental vehicles do not have a Warrant of Fitness. Instead, these vehicles must possess a Certificate of Fitness COF . The COF test is similar to the WOF test, but must be undergone every six months regardless of the age of the vehicle. A WOF test checks tyre condition, brake condition, structural condition, automotive lighting lights , glazing, windscreen wipers and washers, doors, seat belts , airbags if fitted , speedometer, steering and suspension, exhaust, and fuel system. A vehicle must meet certain criteria in each category to pass the Warrant of Fitness. Many local car repair garages throughout New Zealand are authorised to perform testing and to issue Warrants of Fitness.
