  1. Sanatruces II of Parthia

Sanatruces II of Parthia , the son of Mithridates IV of Parthia Mithridates IV , was a pretender to the throne of the Parthian Empire during the disputed reign of his uncle Osroes I of Parthia Osroes I . When Osroes was deposed by the invading Roman Emperor Trajan in 116 in favor of the puppet ruler Parthamaspates of Parthia Parthamaspates , Sanatruces and his father, Osroes brother Mithridates, together claimed the diadem and continued the struggle against the Romans in Mesopotamia . Trajan then marched southward to the Persian Gulf , defeated them, and declared Mesopotamia a province of the Roman Empire . After the Romans withdrew, Osroes drove out Parthamaspates and reclaimed the Parthian throne. Mithridates IV eventually succeeded Osroes about 129 and reigned to about 140 , when he died in an attack on Roman Commagene . Sanatruces, whom he had appointed his successor, predeceased him, also falling in a battle with the Romans. Thus the pair s earlier reign during the abortive campaign of 116 proved Sanatruces sole taste of kingship. His father s longtime rival Vologases III of Parthia Vologases III took over Mithridates realm, but another son of Mithridates, Vologases IV of Parthia Vologases IV , eventually came to the throne after the death of Vologases III in 147. s start s hou Arsacid Empire Arsacid dynasty ? ? s bef before Parthamaspates of Parthia Parthamaspates s ttl title List of kings of Persia Great King Shah of Parthia years 116 AD s aft after Osroes I of Parthia Osroes I end References Dio Cassius , lxviii, 17&ndash 33. History In 138 BCE Rhodogune married Seleucid king Demetrius II of Syria Demetrius II Nicator ruled 146 139 BCE, 129 126 BCE . After bearing several children with him, she was presumably abandoned in 131 BCE when Demetrius, after numerous failed attempts to escape from Parthia, was dispatched back to Antioch during the invasion of Parthia by Demetrius brother, Antiochus VII Sidetes . During their marriage, she had been temporarily a hostage in the Parthian court after an ill fated campaign. Polyaenus http www.attalus.org translate polyaenus8B.html 27.1 8.27 tells us that Rhodogune, informed of a revolt while preparing for a bath, vowed not to bathe or brush her hair until the revolt was neutralised. She immediately went to battle, riding out to the head of her army. She successfully directed the battle, and was depicted thereafter with long, disheveled hair because of her adherence to her vow.
