Balian of Ibelin 1239 &ndash 29 September 1277 was the Lord of Arsuf from 1258 until the early 1260s probably 1261 , when he sold it to the Knights Hospitaller . He was the son and successor of John of Arsuf , Constable of Jerusalem . He was married to Plaisance of Antioch from 1254 until their divorce in 1258, after which he moved from Antioch to Tripoli . He was created Constable of Jerusalem like his father had been in 1268 and held that post until his death. Hugh III of Cyprus Hugh III of Cyprus and Jerusalem appointed Balian bailiff , effectively regent, of the kingdom upon returning to Cyprus in October 1276. Hugh s claim to the royal title, however, was disputed by Charles I of Naples , who sent Roger of Sanseverino to Acre as his bailiff in 1277. Balian initially refused to admit Roger into the citadel until papers signed by Charles, Mary of Antioch , and Pope John XXI were produced and the Knights Hospitallers and John of Versailles , Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Patriarch of Jerusalem , had refused to intervene. To avoid war, he allowed Roger in and Charles was proclaimed king. References Marshall, Christopher. Warfare in the Latin East, 1192&ndash 1291 . Cambridge University Press, 1992. She became Queen consort and Queen regent of the Kingdom of Cyprus and acting Regent of the Kingdom of Jerusalem for her son Hugh II of Cyprus until her death in 1261. Plaisance re married to Balian of Arsuf Balian d Ibelin, Lord of Arsuf , the son of John of Arsuf Jean d Ibelin, Lord of Arsuf , but they divorced and had the marriage annulled in 1258. The official King of Jerusalem at the time was the absentee Conrad IV of Germany Conrad of Hohenstaufen , who died in 1254, with his title passing to his son Conradin , also still in Germany. The position of regent belonged by birthright to the underage Hugh, who was Conradin s immediate heir and hereditarily the next king if Conradin failed to have his own progeny. In 1258, Plaisance s brother Bohemund VI of Antioch brought Hugh and Plaisance to Akko Acre and demanded that they be recognized as King of Jerusalem and regent, respectively. John of Ibelin jurist John of Ibelin count of Jaffa , the Knights Templar , and the Teutonic Knights agreed with this, against the opposition of the Knights Hospitaller and various jurists who still wished to recognize Conradin as king, even though he was not present in the kingdom. Plaisance, supported by a majority of the nobles, was accepted as acting regent and then appointed her former father in law John of Arsuf John of Ibelin lord of Arsuf to rule as Officers of the Kingdom of Jerusalem bailiff in her place he had already been bailiff before her arrival and both Bohemund and John of Jaffa had hoped the presence of Plaisance and Hu ...   more details

  1. Guilhem d'Autpol

Guilhem d Autpol or Daspol floruit fl. 1265&ndash 1270 was a troubadour from Hautpoul in the Languedoc . He wrote four works that survive, three dwelling on intensely religious themes. There exists some evidence internal in his songs that he was a jongleur early on. Esperansa de totz ferms esperans is a religious Alba poetry alba addressed to the Virgin Mary . L autriers, a l intrada d abril is a pious pastorela that may allude to Joan Oliva , a Catalan people Catalan friar who was active post 1270. This would make the work Guilhem s latest. His earliest datable work is tenso with God , Seinhos, aujas, c aves saber e sen , which must have been written sometime between the fall of Caesarea and Arsuf to the Mamluks in 1265 and the Crusade led by James the Conqueror &mdash mentioned in the poem&mdash in 1269. The chief object of Guilhem s addresses to God was a common one among troubadours of his time the Papacy papal policy of launching Crusades against Christians or heretics in Europe to the detriment of the Crusader States in the Holy Land , and the rising star of the Mamluks in Egypt and Syria . God s response is an attack on those who act unjustly in his name, such as the Knights Templar Templars and Hospitallers , and looks forward to the Crusade of 1269. The tenso has affinities with the work of Peire Cardenal and the Monge de Montaudon . Guilhem s only other datable work is a lengthy planh on the death of Louis IX of France 1270 , Fortz tristors es e salvaj a retraire . Sources Riquer, Mart n de .
