File Skulpturhalle Basel 2008 03 30.jpg thumb Skulpturhalle entrance The Skulpturhalle Basel is a museum in Basel , Switzerland , featuring Plaster cast Cast collections cast replicas of antique sculpture. With around 2,000 casts it is the largest collection of its kind in the country, having tripled in size between 1985 and 2010. Since 1961 the collection has been managed by the Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig Antikenmuseum Basel . The collection was started in 1830. From 1849 it was located in the newly opened Museum an der Augustinergasse now the location of the Natural History Museum of Basel Natural History Museum and the Museum of Cultures Basel Museum of Cultures . In 1887 it moved into the Kunsthalle BaselBasel Kunsthalle , where a new wing known as the Skulpturenhalle had been built especially for it. The casts had to be warehoused in 1927 when the Kunstmuseum Basel national art collection was temporarily moved into the Kunsthalle, creating a need for more space. In 1940 the cast collection found a provisional home in a disused factory, four years after plans for a new building had failed to pass a referendum the new building finally materialised in 1963. When original works are split into pieces across various museums, the casts allow all the parts to be brought back together so that complete reconstructions of antique sculptures can be made. The unique Parthenon Project assembles casts of every surviving sculptural remnant from the Parthenon Parthenon Temple in Athens , and exhibits them so as to demonstrate their original arrangements. ref http www.skulpturhalle.ch parthenon parthenon.html Der Parthenon in Basel de icon ref ref http news.bbc.co.uk 1 hi magazine 3505184.stm How the Parthenon marbles are being reborn BBC , 23 March 2004. Born in Vienna to a factory owner, Basel studied at the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule under Felician von Myrbach between 1892 and 1898. He was a reserve officer during the First World War , serving with the rank of Oberleutnant in the 4th Army German Empire Fourth Army on the Battle of Galicia Galician front from March 1915. In the fall he fell ill and was declared unfit for military service. By November he was a war artist serving the Kriegspressequartier . In 1916 he was on the Vistula Land Vistula , in the Battle of Transylvania Carpathians , in Principality of Albania Albania , on the Italian Front World War I Isonzo , and in the Ukraine during World War I Ukraine . It was his artistic breakthrough. In 1919, at the winter exhibition of the Wiener K nstlerhaus , Basel exhibited his work outside of the Kriegspressequartier for the first time. Orphan date February 2009 Basel IA was proposed as an intermediate between the current Basel I accord and the Basel II accord that is being implemented. Basel IA would have been more risk sensitive than Basel I but would not be as complex as the advanced approach under Basel II. On July 20, 2007 by a deal between the various US banking regulators The Federal Reserve , the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency , the Office of Thrift Supervision and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation it was decided to drop the proposed Basel IA and allow Basel II Standardised in its place. The US initially proposed that banks would need to use the advanced approach only if they were to implement Basel II. The idea of Basel IA was to enable smaller US banks to adopt a methodology that is more risk sensitive than Basel I that they are currently using for calculating capital adequacy. The Fed chairman mentioned that smaller banks who do not wish to move to Basel II Advanced or Basel IA could continue to operate under Basel I. http www.federalreserve.gov boarddocs press bcreg 2007 20070720 default.htm Press release by the US Fed on the deal of 20 July 2007 More information about Basel IA can be found in this http www.fdic.gov regulations laws federal 2006 06proposeac73a.html FDIC site , http www.occ.treas.gov ftp bulletin 2006 50.txt OCC site . The Basel Accords see alternative Spelling spelling s below refer to the banking supervision Accords recommendations on banking regulations Basel I , Basel II and Basel III issued by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision BCBS . They are called the Basel Accords as the BCBS maintains its wikt secretariat secretariat at the Bank for International Settlements in Basel , Switzerland and the committee normally meets there. The Basel Committee main Basel Committee on Banking Supervision Formerly, the Basel Committee consisted of representatives from central banks and regulatory authorities of the Group of Ten economic Group of Ten countries plus Luxembourg and Spain . Since 2009, all of the other G 20 major economies are represented, as well as some other major banking locales such as Hong Kong and Singapore . See the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision Committee article for a full list of members. The committee does not have the authority to enforce recommendations, although most member countries as well as some other countries tend to implement the Committee s policies. This means that recommendations are enforced through national or EU wide laws and regulations, rather than as a result of the committee s recommendations thus some time may pass between recommendations and implementation as law at the national level. Spelling The Basel Committee is named after the city of Basel, Switzerland. In early publications, the Committee sometimes used the British spelling Basle or the French spelling B le, names that are sometimes still used in the media. More recently, the Committee has deferred to the predominantly German speaking population of the region and used the spelling Basel.
