Artemis studied Electrical engineering in France and Austria and worked in France , the United Kingdom and Germany . According to Artemis himself, he conceived details of a guided missile when he studied German Bombardments of World War I . After working with designs involving remote tracing and control, he started working after 1933, in Greece, on a remote guided rocket system. With state technical and financial support he constructed his prototypes, which were tested near the island of Salamina in the Summer of 1938. The fate of the designs remains a mystery to this date. Artemis claimed that the designs were given to a foreign power , refusing any further development of his ideas. After World War II he worked in various research institutes, including the National Technical University of Athens , a city where he lived until May 12, 1980. In June 2007 the Albright Knox Art Gallery placed the statue into auction it fetched 28.6 million, the list of most expensive sculptures highest sale price of any sculpture at the time. Description The statue depicts Artemis, the Greek goddess of hunting and wildlife wild animals amongst other things. She is stood on a simple plinth in a pose that shows that she has just released an arrow from her bow. At some point in its history the bow was separated from the sculpture and is no longer part of the overall piece. Her hair is wavy and parted, gathered at the back in a chignon hairstyle chignon . She wears a short chiton costume chiton that folds at the waist and billows outwards and is partly covered by a himation . On her feet are laced sandals, and a stag stands alongside her. Operation Artemis was a short term European Union led military mission to the Democratic Republic of the Congo .
